Comfort in the box

"If you have eight or nine hitters that are comfortable in the batter’s box, it’s difficult to be successful as a pitcher.” This is from Ausmus regarding Suarez possibly tipping his pitches. I'd like to know what this means to you. There are a lot of pitchers who throw hard and inside. Does that mean that the batter isn't comfortable? Some of these pitchers aren't that good.

Actually I think it hints the opposite. He has the pitches to get big league hitters out - a testament to how quickly he advanced - but also as a result of moving up so quickly, he hasn’t gone through the rigors of hitters adapting, adjusting, or predicting his patterns or reading what he’s tipping. He’s dealing with a smarter, more accomplished field of hitters now and he can’t get by on raw stuff as he did in the minors.

Its an experience thing now.

I think it has more to do with his not pitching inside than any tipping going on.   If you don't have to worry about bailing out of stuff, you are planting that back foot and staying back on things a lot longer.

The quote was in reference to the use of his fastball inside. Ausmus seemed to be saying Suarez doesn’t throw in enough, so hitters are comfortable.

However, I looked it up and he throws inside about the same frequency as the major league average. I didn’t break it down by types of pitches though. Maybe he doesn’t throw his fastball in enough, or not far enough in, or not in the right counts, or something like that.

Suarez has major command issues. He throws too many pitches in the hitter’s zones as a result of constantly being behind in the count. When you don’t have overpowering stuff command becomes vital. He was rushed to the big club because of injuries otherwise I don’t think he would have been recalled so soon.

when guys know they don't have to worry about the inside pitch, it makes their at bat that much more straightforward.  They can look in one spot for a pitch.  You don't have to hit a guy in the ear hole pitch inside effectively.

3 or 4 errors by the IFers and nonchalant fielding by the OFer doesn't help either. Adding an additional 10-15 pitches in an inning can take a toll.
