When I was a kid there was a author that wrote sports books for teenagers.  His name was Matt Christopher.  I started reading books because of him.

One summer in the late 60's I found football novels by Tex Maule. After I read those I discovered the series of Baseball novels by Duane Decker.  A great summer of reading sports stories.

I read every single one of his books while in grade school...  To this day I haven't forgotten the name Sylvester Coddmeyer III, "The Kid That Only Hit HRs".

Agree that Beverly Cleary would be on my list as well.  Judy Bloom was all the rage when I was a kid too.

for authors not writing for children quite so young, i'd add names like lm montgomery, fd fitzgerald, and judy bloom. they're some of the authors that got me into reading.
