Lou Gehrig died on this date 75 years ago, of ALS. He was 37 years old.

 

photo above is from May 2, 1939. Lou was out of the lineup for the first time since 1925.

Talking about odds, Wally Pipp was in the stadium that day in May, 1939 when Gehrig took himself out of the lineup. Pipp, long retired from baseball, was in Detroit on business and decided to take in the game.
