Jeffrey Loria is still the worst

He released this a few days ago:

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/24/jeffrey-loria-posts-letter-to-our-fans-in-miami-newspapers/

And then for good measure decided to start talking again today for some reason:

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fish_bytes/2013/02/audio-marlins-owner-jeffrey-loria-discusses-stanton-trades-franchises-future.html

His ability to selectively remember history or just flat out spew BS is impressive, really.

And unfortunately, he insists he has no interest in selling the Marlins.

There but for the grace of God goes my city. Jeffrey Loria and some of his ownership group had serious talks in 2004 with city leaders about moving the Marlins to Las Vegas. I had rather have AAA baseball than that sorry excuse for an MLB franchise.

Oh, and Jeff Mathis would be on my team now.

The controversial trade we made with the Toronto Blue Jays was approved by Commissioner Bud Selig and has been almost universally celebrated by baseball experts outside of Miami for its value.

To Toronto.

Being in Miami, I can't tell you how often or how hard the media rips on him locally.  He's essentially a standing joke on the local network news, and the constant target of criticism.   You cannot mention baseball without people going into a massive rant about the guy.

I lived in Anaheim when Georgia took the Rams to StL....  Compared to the stuff they say about Loria, she got off really easy.

They are doing an Outside The Lines about him and the situation that is rather interesting. Religiously following European football at least what he is saying follow that guideline of blowing things up if they aren't winning trophies right away, but he doesn't have the history of perennial contenders.

What trips me out as I'm watching this is Miami was close to acquiring Albert Pujols last off season for huge dollars. Can you imagine them trying to unload that contract to some team or the return to take on his contract?

He put together 1 roster, with quite a bit of help from pieces that existed before he came into the picture, that got them a ring.

And then blew up that roster.

    • 2012: $101,628,000  - 2,219,444
    • 2011: $ 57,695,000 - 1,520,562
    • 2010: $ 47,429,719 - 1,535,226
    • 2009: $ 36,834,000 - 1,464,109
    • 2008: $ 21,811,500 - 1,335,075
    • 2007: $ 30,507,000 - 1,370,511
    • 2006: $ 14,998,500 - 1,164,134
    • 2005: $ 60,408,834 - 1,852,608
    • 2004: $ 42,143,042 - 1,723,105
    • 2003: $ 45,050,000 - 1,303,214
    • 2002: $ 41,979,917 - 813,111
    • 2001: $ 35,762,500 - 1,261,220
    • 2000: $ 19,900,000

Combine this with Tampa Bay.  And Florida is just a crappy baseball state.  2003 was their WS Championship year.  Until last year, never an attendance over 2 million.  And he did not blow up the payroll till 3 years after their WS.  When attendance was still crappy.

Looking at 2009 and 2008 financials.  Revenue for the Marlins was $135 and $139 million.  For the Angels, $240 and $237 million.  Angels ticket revenue, $100 and $103 million.  For the Marlins, $21 and $20 million.  1/5 of the Angels on a bit more than 50% less fans.  So you can't say that they are overcharging.
