IGNORED

I just voted in NYC

People should simply be able to vote for who they want for president, regardless of what party they belong to. Anything else plainly suppresses voting.

Some guy named George Washington warned against political parties too you know.

And they get to...first Tuesday in November every 4 years.

Having people register to vote in a political party primary is not suppressing the vote. If you can't understand the difference between Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Voter Roll Purging, Voter ID Laws, Reducing poll hours, etc. etc. and allowing parties to identify how their nominee is selected...it might not be a bad thing you couldn't figure out how to vote for your preferred candidate in a primary.

In 200+ years the country has primarily had two parties...it's not going to change regardless of what George Washington said.

The United States Electoral College is the institution that elects the President and Vice President of the United States every four years. Citizens of the United States do not directly elect the president or the vice president; instead, these voters directly elect designated intermediaries called "electors," who almost always have pledged to vote for particular presidential and vice presidential candidates (though unpledged electors are possible) and who are themselves selected according to the particular laws of each state.

That causes more corruption in primaries than anything. Imagine your boy Bernie losing to Vermin Supreme because the Republicans decided to create a voting block to block your candidate.

Your solution is more corruption, the Chaos party platform.

You said join a "club" or start a new one to make change.

What real meaningful change have libertarians made in the election? The "best" third option besides reps and dems. You guys are mostly libertarians here, right?

I guess the most meaningful thing we've done is not complaining about the way other clubs run their initiation processes.  If I was concerned about that, I'd join their club and try to change things.  But I have no interest in being an R or D.

Let's cover this again, grasshopper. The primary system exists to reduce the number of candidates in the field prior to the party conventions and the general election. You can't make it wide open at this time because of how the system is set up. You'd need a major overhaul of the entire system.

And it was John Adams who strongly advised against having political parties.

Yeah but what do you really know about this?

A major overhaul is pretty much what's needed, absolutely.

George Washington warned against them in his farewell address.

The first President of the United States got it right. In his farewell address, George Washington warned of the "continual mischiefs of the spirit of party" making it the "interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it." In other words, he cautioned against the dangers of political parties.
