I liked his upside and thought he would be a good get. At 5M per a real nicely priced get at that!

 

His walks have increased maybe some arm issues in Miami that weren't disclosed he was used a lot from 12-14. But, his #'s dropped again after hanging in St Louis for a few months last year....

Those are the types of pitchers I'd be offering low salaries with tons of incentives for.  The best our bullpen has been is years is when we got Jason Grilli on the cheap when people thought he too had lost it.  Turned into a pretty darn solid 7th inning option.

Seemed like his drop in performance was connected to a drop in velocity -- went from topping out at 95 to topping out at 91 last year...   And his FB which had been his best pitch (value wise), according to FG pitch data was his worst last year.   Since it's not uncommon for RPs to see dips in velocity from time to time it might have been a blip.  Or as you point out, maybe he went Frieri and started to lose it.

 

2/10 -- for a potential closer isn't a huge risk.

He strikes me as a "I love to hear the sound of my own voice" type of guy. An attention seeker of sorts, a non drunk AO in a suit, or a skinnier less passive aggressive Stradling

This might be a make or break season for dipoto. He's made a million moves and traded a lot of prospects. If the mariners make the playoffs he will prob be considered one of the best.
