CJ Wilson for Prado?

Recommended Posts

A more realistic trade scenario is Santiago for Prado, and that is a trade worth considering. The upside is that Prado in 2016 probably helps us more than Santiago in 2016, but Santiago has an additional year of club control.

And Prado wouldn't cost much. I think the Yankees are paying $3 mil of his salary, and Santiago will probably get $5 mil in arb. So adding Prado for Santiago would only slightly increase payroll.

I'm actually thinking CJ's going to step up in 2016. He'll be healthier and more rested than he has been in a while. No team would be willing to give the Angels fair value on him, so they may as well keep him. It's his last year before FA too, and to remain living the lavish lifestyle he has with all those toys, he's going to need an income. I could see him going 180 innings and 3.50 ERA. That could have some utility at the back end of the rotation.

I think everyone's right about the Santiago-Prado deal. Seems pretty fair.

My biggest concern heading into next year is the fact that they'll keep rolling out Weav every 5th day, even though his ERA will be around 5. Meanwhile they'll do something idiotic like put Tropeano and Skaggs back in AAA, because that's what a stupid team clinging to relics past would do.

Interesting, I had no idea a that they were paying a portion of his contract. That makes the trade even more appealing.

You're right about having an extra year of control being important, but to be quiet frankly a year from now we'll have a pretty heavy log jam in the pitching department. Plus hopefully by then, we will have more on what to expect from Cowart/Kubitza.

Yeah, Weaver does worry me as well. I mentioned him pitching only in home games w/ but that is probably nothing more than a pipe dream. Either way, we have 8 possible arms in Richards, Heaney, Santiago, Wilson, Weaver, Tropeano, Skaggs, Shoemaker and probably even Newcomb sometime late in the season.

Depth is definitely important, especially with the question marks on the young guys being able to produce (or reproduce) but we can't afford to waste 3 of those pitchers' value in the minors. 2-3 will have to go.

I say Santiago is a definite go because of his solid value. Him for Prado sounds fair. Tropeano is also possible to leave. Shoemaker is probably better value to the team by keeping him in AAA in case of depth because of his low trade value.

Assuming that Skaggs is ready/ when he is ready, this gives us:

1. Richards

2. Heaney

3. Wilson

4. Skaggs

5. Weaver

Shoemaker - Depth

Newcomb - Eventually enters rotation

Also, how far off from being ML ready are Ellis and Smith?

How far off are Ellis

Tropeano likely won't be dealt. He was solid for the Angels down the stretch, his numbers in AAA were inflated, which deflates his value. Teams wouldn't value him as the #3/4 starter he is, so if the Angels were smart (oh how I wish they were) they'd put him in the rotation and leave him there.
