With the iphone you do it with the flashlight. I'm sure other phones web same way. With the iphone, there is a dial that you can turn in the flashlight app on how fast you want the light to flash.

A lady Angel fan told me that it started with the Christmas in July promotion and sort of snowballed from there.  But I have no idea if peoples were doing it before then, en masse.
