Well that's not exactly the vote of confidence Logan O'Hoppe was looking for. I mean if he's the catcher of the future, signing Contreras would've delayed that development by a half decade.

Unless they were planning on using him at 1B or LF? If it was LF, they could flip Ward for a SS.

If accurate, Contreras was looking for the most money and or he wanted to play for the Cardinals. Curious as to when or if we will find out the Angels offer.

They’re putting bids in on good players and worrying about any jams it creates after the fact. Could’ve been intended to potentially drive up or keep him out of Houston too.

The value in Contreras and O'Hoppe for that matter is the fact that they're catchers.

Exactly. This is a great sign. Now they likely offered him 2-3 years, but still means they're not obsessing over their own prospects. Look at TOR. Have several great catchers, and now they are in a position of strength to trade.

Has nothing to do with confidence in O'Hoppe. He's 22. Let him earn it, let him learn it. 

Best part about this to me is a few things: 

1) They aren't holding SS open for Neto if they aren't holding C open for O'Hoppe. O'Hoppe is way closer. 
2) They want to upgrade the lineup now, and Contreras over Stassi means they aren't blindly believing their guys will be good again. 
3) They are being aggressive even if we aren't hearing anything. Kind of always how they've done it.

It makes the most sense that Minasian is simply being opportunistic. If there's a FA that he feels the market is undervaluing, he'll bid on them and worry about the ramifications later.

Wonder if they'd have flipped O'Hoppe as part of a trade if they ended up getting Contreras. Honestly, kind of glad they got outbid here. They need to focus on SS, SP(assuming they're sticking with a 6 man rotation) and RP/bench depth

You don't think he saw the league-bottom production at C (30/30) and felt the need to upgrade?

Maybe they planned on moving one to 1B, and shopping Walsh around? Or maybe shopping O’Hoppe for pitching / SS ? Idk. Didn’t expect theM to be in on the C this off-season. 
 

starting to think we are making an actual run for Swanson. Makes too much sense. We need SS and Perry does have ties to him.

If they have "significant" money to spend then go after Correa/Swanson and Senga. 

They really are trying to add pieces in any place which is cool to see, just hope that means SS too. 

No way this is Arte being the only one making the financial increase.

My first thought was that he got something wrong and we weren't involved.  

But if true is nice to see they're still willing to spend.  I'm a little puzzled at the choice of player but my guess is that he would have been a part time catcher.  

Perry really does love his catchers though.
