Odd: Angels have an off-day next Sunday

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure why I hadn't noticed this before, but the Angels apparently play a 2-game Fri/Sat homestand against the Padres next weekend, and then are off on Sunday before starting a 3-game series against the Yankees.  Can't remember the last time they had a Sunday off-day.  Am I missing something here?

It is very odd. It happens occasionally when there’s a 2-game series that has to be on a weekend. The Angels have the same thing next year.

They were supposed to have one on the original 2020 schedule.

But this will be the first one since I’ve been covering the team (2013).

I've been following the team since 1998 and don't ever remember this happening.

Why would they only play two against the Padres? You figure Sundays are fantastic for attendance. It seems like Arte is losing out on a lot of money.

Well, Arte isn't the one who does the scheduling.  The Angels and Padres only play each other 4 times this year: 2 home games for each team.  It's just very rare to see a 2-game series on a weekend.  Hence, my post.

Why only 4 games instead of a regular 3-game stint? It seems like a screwup.

You play 20 Interleague games each year, 10 home and 10 away.

There are 5 teams they play in interleague (sometimes 6 when you aren’t playing your corresponding division).

The math doesn’t work with all 3-game series.

This is why I would tweak the schedule for every team going forward.

18 games against division opponents = 72 games

6 games against all other league opponents and also all teams in the other league’s division that your team’s  division is assigned to = 90 games

Only 3 game series, one off day each week, including a 3 day ASB, 27 weeks plus 3 days
