RIP Francis Rocco Prestia, legendary bassist and founding member of Tower of Power, at age 69. I had no idea that he was living here until I saw the article about his death.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Rocco in 2014. Keyboardist Roger Smith invited me to do a photo shoot at a recording session for the TOP rhythm section at a recording studio owned by former UNLV and NFL QB Randall Cunningham. When I took them back to their hotel, Rocco casually tossed his bass into the trunk. "It's just a piece of wood", he said.

Smith told me beforehand that while guitarist Jeff Tamelier was the technical one, talking in terms of chords and pitch intervals, Rocco was more like, "Just play and I'll fit in." I saw this in the studio.
