Efficiency is Key — Griffin Canning is Back

Good article about Canning's start last night and some of his advanced stats. Canning looked like a top of the rotation guy.

Mickey Callaway was on the Angels back when Bud Black emphasized getting through a batter in four pitches or less. It looks like he is passing on those lessons and moving away from a lot of 3-2 counts that rack up a lot of wasted pitches that force the pitcher to leave the game early.

Canning was a bulldog on the mound last night. Reminded me a lot of a young David Cone. 

You love to see it. Looks like his elbow is just fine!

Don't underestimate the impact of his pitch sequences last night.....he made some location mistakes but got away with them.

Good teams will hit him and he has to trust his approach as much as his stuff to survive.  It looked like he didn't trust anything last year.

Mickey Calloway is head strong about his staff throwing first pitch strikes.  He preaches it endlessly.  It creates such an advantage for the pitcher to be ahead in the count than behind.  Canning was doing that last night, and it really kept his pitch count manageable. 
 

But you are right eligrba, he got away with a few pitches up in the zone last night, especially in innings 5-6.  I’ll chalk that up to a little fatigue.  He’ll get stronger and endurance will come.  I’m just hoping for a complete, injury free season for him.  He is definitely someone this club will need to step up in a complete 162 game season.
