Silver Linings - The 2019 edition

Biggest silver lining for me started last fall when I expected 2019 to be simply a transition year. As soon as Ohtani and Richards went down, I knew there wasn't much we could do to make 2019 competitive without blowing up the farm, which wasn't going to happen. Adding to that, we have a brand new manager and coaching staff to work with, a bunch of prospects expected to ease in during 2019 but not quite impact-ready, and multiple vets on expiring contracts...I haven't set the bar high for '19. Which is okay.

I think 2020-2030 is going to kick ass, and in many ways, a middling/poor 2019 would help that. Better draft position, more playing time to break the rookies in, no intense pressure with new coaching staff, no temptation to buy anyone for a shot at the WC, further incentive to sell vets off...I don't want the Angels to lose, but it would not be a bad thing if they were in 3rd or 4th place come July, struggling to reach .500, and have a productive Harvey, Cahill, Lucroy, Allen, Calhoun, and Cozart to shop around. Winning should be priority #1A, but #1B should be building these flippable assets up as well. If Eppler can land another Buttrey, Sandoval, Jerez->Stratton group this July, we'll be sitting pretty for the next decade.

Oh yeah and the bullpen looks good.

I can't wait until AO realizes that Upton will get $28 million in his final season as an Angel.  It's not actually $21 million per...  He's getting $18 million this year.

That's why I was meaning for that to imply an average per season.   At least his partial 2019 season will only cost $18 million.
