More NCAA hypocrisy

Recommended Posts

I was watching the first game of the College World Series this afternoon (desperately hoping that Oklahoma State would lose, but I digress). During a commercial break, they ran the PSA that Billie Jean King made for the NCAA. I really hadn't paid much attention to it before, but today I watched the text that appeared on screen near the end of the spot: Prioritizing academics, well-being and fairness.

Well being I might concede. What the NCAA prioritizes above all else is cash. They have their pet schools who can do no wrong, and their scapegoats who they go after at the drop of a hat. Until someone pointed it out, they had Johnny Manziel Texas A&M jerseys for sale on their own website, even though they prevent players from profiting from any use of their likeness or any sales of merchandise. Academics? That is also debatable. Fairness should never be mentioned in anything describing the NCAA. It is one of the most inconsistent and poorly-run organizations I have ever seen.

The Billie Jean King spot, for those who might not have seen it.
