In a 10 year span from 1955 to 1964, Willie Mays accumulated 89.0 WAR.  He was 9 WAR above the next closest (Mantle), and 43 WAR above the person with the 5th most during that time (Al Kaline 56 WAR).  He made the AS team in every one of those seasons and won a GG in 8 of them.  

 

He had the highest WAR of any position player in the NL in all but two of those 10 seasons.  

 

During that span, he never won an MVP.  Not only did he not win, he averaged almost 6th place.  Not even in 1962 where he put up a 10.5 WAR season where he hit 49hrs and drove in 141 rbi AND his team went to the WS.  He finished 2nd to Maury Wills by 6 votes.  Wills had a .720ops with 104 SBs.

Maury Wills was a west coast player (Dodgers). No doubt Mays was the more valuable player, but the East Coast Bias wasn't the reason for that season at least. Obviously it had to play in, in other years though.

Speaking of Maury Wills, he is 83 years old and announced this is the last year he will be involved in baseball (Dodgers' spring training instructor).

 

Man, I'm getting old. I enjoyed watching him in his prime.
