Phillies To Make Managerial Change

The Phillies have called a press conference today that is scheduled for 2:30 ET, and Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports that the team will announce a new manager (Twitter link).

Charlie Manuel has been managing the Phillies since the beginning of the 2005 season, during which time the team has posted a record of 780-636. The Phils won a World Series title under his leadership in 2008 and returned to the World Series in 2009, though they were denied a repeat championship by the Yankees.

It's unusual for a manager to resign or be fired this late in the season. They usually wait until the season is over for the manager to resign or be fired.

1:03pm: Sandberg is the new Phillies manager, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports (on Twitter).

12:58pm: Ryne Sandberg is the most likely candidate to replace Manuel on an interim basis through the end of the season, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.

you have to imagine things had deteriorated with Manuel quite a bit for them not to wait until the offseason.

Either that or they think Sandberg is their guy for 2014 and they think a head start on building relationships with a veteran team might be a good idea...

Yep..just a matter of letting Ryno settle in for the next 50 games and get a head start on next season.
Bummer, as I have been hyping Ryno as the guy who answers the question " Who would be better than Scioscia" every time it has come up in the last 4 or 5 seasons (meaning a lot)

1:29pm: The Phillies have officially announced that Sandberg will move from third base coach to interim manager. First base coach Juan Samuel will become the third base coach, and assistant hitting coach Wally Joyner will become the team's new first base coach.

Not sure if Sandberg would have been the right fit here in Anaheim, but I would have been interested to find out.

Listening to the press conference now. Ruben Amaro just about broke down and cried when talking about how close he is with Manuel and how difficult the decision was. The Phils offered him a spot in the organization but he's taking some time off.

The Phillies won the World Series in 2008 and made the playoffs all the way up to 2011, and he still got fired.  Big market, big pressure.  The Fat Man hasn't won a World Series since 2002 or made the playoffs since 2009.  I wouldn't be shocked to see Manual manage here for a year or two if Erstad isn't ready for next year.
