Gaylord Perry Passes Away

Gaylord Perry may have been known because of the spitball, but that was also exaggerated and overblown. Fact is, he was a very talented pitcher. Also, unless you have talent to begin with, putting spit on a ball will not cause it to do anything out of the ordinary. He was the first pitcher to earn Cy Young Awards in both leagues, the second coming with the Padres at the age of 40. He won over 300 games in his career, and is among the leaders in strikeouts. He pitched until he was almost 44 years old, and never once had a sore arm. He was tough; he was talented, and even in his 40's he was still effective. So, yeah. He has a reputation, and maybe deservedly so. But he also was a very talented, smart, and skilled pitcher. He was also a very good defender from the mound. He earned his way into the HOF.

Saw a crazy stat showing that in a 3 or 4 year run he had 111 complete games - one hundred and eleven. Let that sink in.

The fun thing about watching him pitch was trying to see when and how he was loading up the ball. In the end, I think it ended up being more bark than bite.
