OC Register: Angels manage just two hits Cactus League finale loss

Recommended Posts

THE GAME: The Angels lost 2-0 to the Padres in a seven-inning game Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium. It was the final game of the Arizona portion of spring training. Most of the Angels regulars were already back in Southern California to prepare for the three-game Freeway Series, which begins Sunday.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Jaime Barria pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit. Barria is a candidate for a spot in the Angels bullpen, even though he’s also among the top starters on their depth chart beyond the six who open the season in the rotation. Barria was going to be out of options before an arbiter ruled that he has a fourth option this year. … Right-hander Aaron Slegers pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing a single. Slegers, who has missed much of the spring with back spasms, has not allowed a run in five innings. … Right-hander Junior Guerra was charged with two runs in one inning, although both scored on a double by Jorge Mateo against left-hander Alex Claudio.

HITTING REPORT: Justin Upton looped a fly ball down the right-field line for a double, then took third on an error. Upton is 14 for 37 (.378) with a 1.236 OPS this spring. He has eight extra-base hits, including four homers. … Brandon Marsh had a seventh-inning single, the Angels’ only other hit. … Upton, Jared Walsh and Dexter Fowler were the only Angels regulars to play in the game.

DEFENSE REPORT: Brandon Marsh played center field, his first time in the field in a Cactus League game this spring. Marsh had been dealing with a shoulder issue that limited his throwing, appearing only in the field in a B game previously. Marsh made a leaping catch at the warning track. … Right fielder Jo Adell made a diving catch going in and toward his right. Manager Joe Maddon said the key was that Marsh let Adell know he was backing him up so Adell could go after the ball more aggressively. Adell’s defense has been one of the primary reasons the Angels are having him start this season in the minors, but Maddon said he spoke to Adell on Saturday morning and believes he “is in a real good place. He’s got a great plan. He knows exactly what he has to work on.”

UP NEXT: Angels vs. Dodgers, 6 p.m. PT, Sunday, Angel Stadium, Fox Sports West, 830 AM

This is interesting. It makes me wonder if Adell will be a better defender by simply having Marsh next to him in the outfield. Although, that may not happen in the majors unless Marsh pushes Trout off CF.

Adell was a CF during his early minor league days.

Trout/Adell/Marsh in 2022?
