THE GAME: The Angels snapped a tie with five runs in the fifth inning in a 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Andrew Heaney gave up an unearned run in two innings in his first start of the spring. Heaney retired the first five hitters of the game before a runner reached on an error and scored on a single. “I attacked the strike zone, threw a lot of heaters,” Heaney said. “Trying to work ahead, and felt good about it.” … Angels starters have not allowed an earned run in 12 innings through the first six spring training games. … Right-hander Jaime Barria, who pitched in relief but is also a candidate for the rotation, added three scoreless innings in his second outing of the spring. He has not allowed a run in five innings so far this spring. … Right-hander Keynan Middleton worked a scoreless inning, with his fastball at 96-97 mph. His fastball was around that velocity before Tommy John surgery, but it had dipped to 94 mph when he returned last August.

HITTING REPORT: Jo Adell has a hit in all four games he’s played this spring, including a first-inning RBI double. Adell is 4 for 12 with five strikeouts. … Shohei Ohtani had his first hit of the spring, an RBI single. Ohtani, who was also hit by a pitch, is 1 for 6 this spring. … Michael Hermosillo had two singles, improving to 4 for 9. Hermosillo is the leading candidate to win the fourth outfield spot. … Arismendy Alcantara hit a two-run homer to snap a tie in the sixth inning. A non-roster invitee, Alcantara is likely to provide middle infield depth at Triple-A.

DEFENSE REPORT: Third baseman Tommy La Stella had two almost identical plays to his backhand side in the first two innings. He made the first, but let the second get by for an error. La Stella has worked out mostly at second this spring. … Catcher Anthony Bemboom threw out a runner trying to steal second.

UP NEXT: Angels (RHP Dylan Bundy) vs. San Francisco Giants (LHP Drew Smyly), Saturday, noon PT, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Happy for Barria. He looked good today and he's definitely trimmed some of the fat. Barria, Suarez and Sandoval could all be valuable contributors this year. I think Sandoval pitches this weekend.

I think he pitches one of the split squad games tomorrow.  Not sure if he’s at Diablo or the away squad though.
