Jose Rondon out of the season, Roth DFA'd

The biggest thing with Roth right now is exactly what prevented him from being a 1st round pick a couple years back.  He may be one of the most celebrated collegiate pitchers ever, but the Angels grabbed him in the 9th round because scouts just weren't sure if his stuff translated to the majors.  As we've seen, he's the sort of guy that can be very solid in AA/AAA.  Above average even.  But the arsenal just doesn't fly with major league hitters.  He's got a slightly above average pitch and two below average pitches.  He tries to make it work with deception by changing arm slots, which he's done effectively in the minors.  But again, it just doesn't work against the best in the world.

He should be able to cut out a nice career in the minors though, if he wants.  I'd wager that we haven't seen the last of him in the majors either.  He may get a shot to be a reliever down the road.

As for Jose, he's a perfect example of why projecting future tools is so difficult to do.  Seeing him as this 17 year old that could hit for average, has plate discipline, room for power, good speed and can pick it at SS was exciting.  The speed stuck, as did his defense at SS.  Against a higher level of play, the plate discipline never grew into anything more than average, the power below average, and the batting average and speed around average.

The result appears to be someone that'll probably end up being a utility player in the majors in his mid-20's.  Not the top prospect we envisioned.

This thread is filled with lots of younger posters. Anyone who's been a fan for 30+ years knows that this team has had a staggering number of crappy pitchers, enough to challenge the amount of bandwidth on this site if we were to start discussing all of them.

Signed,

Hilly Hathaway
