Enough with the dumpster diving and digging up other teams' castaways. We are looking more and more like an expansion team with every passing week it seems. If these guys we have been collecting off of the scrap heap were any good, their former teams would've kept them. For the vast majority of these castaways, no change in scenery is going to change the fact that they are just not talented enough for the major leagues. I thought that having the "Los Angeles" in front of "Angels" was supposed to be the elixar that brought in all the superstars and money. Ha. It takes more than the name of a large city to actually be a big-market team.

i agree in principal, but the reality is this is the best option these days. we have very little that we can trade, and most of these signings are simply guys with some experience that can fill out a roster until the injured return.

but yes, this is a very dark time in team history. there may be light at the end of the tunnel, but this team can't even find the tunnel right now.

The peripherals in the MLB have really never been good.

I'd also be pretty surprised for the Pirates of all teams to get rid of for free a young pitcher under team control. If there were literally anything promising with the player they probably would have found it and kept him. They're actually pretty good at developing pitchers.

Yeah, good points, Tank.

"The Angels are acquiring right-hander Roansy Contreras in a trade with the Pirates, reports Alex Stumpf of MLB.com. Pittsburgh designated Contreras for assignment five days ago.

The Halos have an open 40-man roster spot after designating lefty Amir Garrett for assignment last night, and they already cleared a 26-man roster spot earlier today when they announced that utilityman Niko Goodrum and righty Davis Daniel were optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake, with infielder Luis Rengifo coming off the injured list. A second 26-man roster move wasn’t revealed at the time, but it now seems that’ll go to Contreras, who’s out of minor league options and thus cannot be sent to Triple-A himself."

Ummm do you know that we suck? Half our roster is on IR. This entire season should be spent trying to find clean peanuts to either keep or trade at the deadline for prospects. If Kevin Pillar stays hot for a couple more weeks we can probably get a teams top 25-30 prospect for him all for the price of us picking him off the scrap heap… have to take the small victories where we can this season all while hoping our young talent continues to develop/stay healthy

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 55

Originally signed for $250,000 by the Yankees at the start of the 2016-17 international signing period, Contreras had a very strong year in Low-A in 2019 and was added to the team’s 40-man roster in Nov. 2020 as what appeared to be a high-floor type starting pitcher. Sent to the Pirates in Jan. 2021 as part of the Jameson Taillon trade, Contreras saw his stuff -- and his stock -- skyrocket, despite missing a large chunk of time with a forearm strain. He capped things off with a strong big league debut and a turn as one of the better pitching prospects in the Arizona Fall League.

Contreras has seen his fastball go from a solid offering to an explosive one that touched 97-98 mph with ease and averaged around 96 mph with excellent life and high spin rates in 2021. He has both a high-spin 80-mph curve and a mid-80s slider, showing the ability to miss bats with both of them on a regular basis. While he doesn’t use it as much, his changeup features good sink and should be a legitimate above-average fourth offering.

The right-hander finds the strike zone consistently with all of his pitches, and he’s very athletic on the mound, so he could have better-than-average command eventually. There are concerns about health and durability, especially given the injury in 2021, but the Pirates were erring on the side of caution, and Contreras is strong even though he’s undersized, giving confidence he’ll be able to hold up as a big league starter.

When was that scouting report from? He hasn't done much in the past couple years. Gotta wonder why a team like the Pirates would be letting a guy like him go if there was any hope of salvaging him.

Two years ago.

That said, maybe he's better as a reliever?

In terms of waiver wire projects this is as promising as it gets.

^^^This^^^  Guy is still young (25) and has a decent arm.  Not much risk involved in giving him a shot...I suspect other teams were interested but 40 man and 26 man rosters have to be managed and, with no options, not every team could give him a chance.

Doubt he’s worth the trouble

Looks like if the Angels tries limiting his fastball and focused more on off speed/breaking stuff they could maybe coax some better results, and if I’m remembering right, that’s sort of been the Sandoval/Canning plan.
