The case for trading Jose Suarez

Actually it's pretty straightforward and won't require much. His best work by far has been as a swing man, and when the pitch clock comes next year, his rhythm will be destroyed. He takes 25 second between pitches and the league is looking at 15/18 seconds.

Right now, he’s the FIFTH best starter, only because of waiting to see if Detmers continues to progress.

Suarez may occasionally blow hitters away.   But he’s too susceptible to BBs and HRs.

Or part of a package with better players.....he's ok but not going to be the center piece of a package to get you a  good player.....

Montas is controlled through 2023.

Rock solid for over a year now, averaging around 6 innings/start

That helps, not too little control (not worth it) and not too much control (too big trade package).

Would the A’th even entertain the thought of trading within the division?

No, especially not for a bundle of middling Angels prospects.

Pretty much every Angels prospect is middling, unless you include Detmers. To get Montas, you'd have to start with Detmers, then throw in Marsh, just get a conversation started.

I’m not opposed to trading him but I think we shouldn’t trade low and right now with Adams and Suarez we probably are trading low.  Let’s let Adams show some life over a little bit  and increase his stock.  And there’s no reason to rush with Suarez.  Hopefully he has some success here early on and makes himself a nice chip.  Hopefully the Angels play well and are in serious playoff contention.  If things go right we may be able to use Suarez and Adams to get what we need.

Oakland will not take on any significant $ when trading Montas, so Canning would most likely be excluded.  

Suarez has four seasons of team control left, not eligible for FA until 2027.  Along with Adams and Jackson, these are the types of players Oakland is looking for until they can move the team and really increasing their attendance numbers, and profits.  

We could actually trade these guys, and another pitching prospect, for a player like Montas.  Or we could make the same deal with Pittsburgh.  Or Tampa.

Our starters aren't even the problem right now.  Our magical, revamped BP has sucked complete ass. 

Highest HR rate in the MLB, 28th in K/9 rate, bottom five in ERA... you can basically look up any stat showing "this is how shitty your BP is" and it includes the Angels.

Or we can put him in the Bp, which should solve the Bullpen issue and gives us another dominate arm down there. We can Replace him with Barria or Canning. We don't need an ace to fill in as our Number 5, we need a inning eater and a guy that pitches to atleast low 4 era. Suarez has yet to that, I'd still give him a few more starts and hopefully his fat ass starts attacking the strike-zone

He is only 24 still learning. Last 5 starts in 2021 he was 3 and 1 ERA under 3. He is off to a bad start, remember Angels depth at starters is not deep.

The only number I'm concerned with is the time between pitches. That pitch clock would ruin the poor kid.

Suarez to the pen is an interesting thought.   With Quijada out for a while, only one lefty (Loup) exists in the pen.

Barria is a better starter.

I’ve rarely been pro-3 lefties in the rotation.

It will be interesting to see who avaialbe at the trade deadline. At the moment, I am really comfortable with Our top 3 of Othani, Thor and Sandy

Angels would not trade Marsh straight up for Montas.
