I'm tempted to say the musical instruments, because that skill can be enjoyed alone as well as in company, but then I think of all the Scandinavian TV noir that I could enjoy without the subtitles if I took the languages. Yes, actually I'm going to go with languages, instruments are easier to learn.

While it would certainly be very cool to be able to sit in with pretty much any band or musical group and contribute to a jam session, I would prefer to be fluent in every language.  There is something very satisfying about being able to converse with others.  Back in the day, one of my co-workers was deaf.  I had been taking night classes at the local JC and one semester I noticed they had American Sign Language classes.  I decided to sign up for the ASL course. and it was very rewarding.  I got to the point where I was able to converse on all sorts of topics with my co-worker.  It definitely made a difference for both of us.     One day I came into work and he signed to me that he was going to retire at the end of the month.  Great for him, but I lost my signing buddy.  Without anyone to talk to my skills eroded.
