Watching Verlander reminds me of what a true ace looks like, what defines and separates an ace from everyone else. It is not only top-notch stuff, but the confidence to use it and get ahead in the count. If you watch a player like Verlander, he's always 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, etc. 

This is also one of the reasons Garret Richards--who had ace-caliber stuff--never became an ace. He didn't have this mentality, this confidence, this ability to get ahead in the count on a regular basis.
