Kole Calhoun bunting

Travis Rodgers this morning talking about "why Calhoun decided to bunt with a 3-1 count" - implying that it was Calhoun's decision, not Scioscia's.

 

Could that possibly be?

As for Calhoun, it was clear on the first pitch, he can't bunt, and is extremely uncomfortable doing so.

 

Perhaps I would have changed it up on 2-0 or 3-1 and let him swing away.    

 

It's just as inexcusable to see an MLB player that can't bunt, than an NBA player who can't hit a FT.

 

I thought that AB for Calhoun was the killer, although there were several, especially the defensive Circus Vargas out there.

1. Calhoun sucks at it

2. He's a very good hitter with a big hole on the right side of the infield.

3. 2-0 and 3-1 he can zone for one pitch or walk

4. A successful bunt takes the bat out of the best player in the world's hands

Why would Calhoun decide this on his own? He's bunted twice his entire major league career so far (well, three times now). It's not like he was a prolific bunter in the minors, either.

No way Calhoun decided to bunt on his own.  I think in the postgame comments Scioscia said they wanted to move the runner over so that's what they were trying to do.

It was a dumb call before he even entered the batters box. Had he successfully got it down, they would have just walked Trout. Not to mention Calhoun was one of the only guys actually putting decent swings on the ball last night.

Horrible call all around, for the reasons posted, and a turning point in the game.

 

But Trout/Pujols/Hamilton/Kendrick are mostly responsible for this loss. The big guns went 0-18.

2. The game situation called for a bunt. The 3-1 count doesn't change anything.

3. The Royals still would of pitched to Trout with Davis on the mound. Those who think otherwise are clueless.

4. As it turns out ... Trout, Pujols , and Kendrick all has chances for driving in the go ahead run that inning.

5. Finally, Calhoun, Trout, Pujols, and Kendrick all failed at their jobs.

The Royals employed the same tactics all night trying to get a runner in scoring position, by bunt or the stolen base. The difference is they finally said **** it and hit the ball over the fence instead. Wish the Angels had thought of that.
