Good Times in Ukraine and Russia

Recommended Posts

You have to wonder with how poorly the Russians have performed on the battlefield, does that lack of training and maintenance work it's way to its nuclear weapons. If so how many launch failures were to occur if they ever tried to first strike?

Maybe Putin's big bluff is he doesn't have a credible nuclear threat. So he has to keep the West out of Ukraine because there is no way for him to win if the Ukraine is supplied with air power.

Ukraine, Russia could be inching closer to ending war after diplomatic talks, Turkish president claims

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan claimed on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are nearing "consensus" on key issues to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war. Turkey has been hosting diplomatic talks between the nations.

"We will continue our talks with both Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky from now on as well," Erdoğan said, according to his presidential office. "All our efforts aim to create an atmosphere of peace by bringing together the two leaders."

"As is known, there is almost a consensus regarding such issues as NATO, disarmament, collective security and using Russian as official language in the technical infrastructure works during the ongoing process in Belarus," the Turkish president added. "However, there is the issue of Crimea and Donbass, which is impossible for Ukraine to consent to."

"I think Mr. Zelensky has displayed wise leadership with an understanding to take the issue to referendum by saying ‘That is a decision that must be made by the entire Ukrainian people'," Erdoğan added.

Ragip Soylu, Turkey bureau chief for Middle-East Eye, claimed that the Turkish president plans to tell Putin, "Make an honourable exit in Ukraine and become an architect of peace."

Even if this is true, I still hope someone takes out Putin

Why should the Ukraine agree to disarmament when it is Russia that is the threat and the aggressor?

They shouldn’t. They should demand Russia leave immediately, give back Crimea, apologize for their war crimes, and fully compensate Ukraine for the loss of life and damage to property. And then they should immediately join NATO.

This

Russia has shit the bed hard.

Its easy for me to sit here and say this. Im not there. And people are dying.

But its laughable that Russia invaded, got blunted badly, its troops are starving in the field and stuck digging in, and they have the balls to still ask for anything, including "speak russian".

It’s has not gone as one would have presumed for sure.  It certainly appears fair to say that their planning was been very poor and they’ve taken significant losses.  The thread I posted discusses this.  But a couple of key points.  We still have no good idea about the losses the Ukrainians have sustained.  The likely presumption is significant losses.  2nd, the war is ongoing.  Extremely premature to assume that Russia is defeated or on its way to defeat.  They are almost certainly not.  No doubt that the Ukrainians have performed well tho.  Like the opposite of their disaster in 2014.

I dont think for a heartbeat that Russia is "done". At some point the gloves are going to come off.

That said, Russia has already lost. Theres absolutely no way theyre going to be able to conquer that country, and their going to run out of money.

They seriously misjudged not only how much Ukraine would resist, but how much the world would respond.

A big part of the reason why a ton of the very good commentators on Russia and European security were wrong on this is because Putins decision to invade seemed very foolish on its face.  Mostly, Putin has been a pretty astute character on the global stage but this one sure seems like a fuck up.  It’s hard to say really what’s going on.  I don’t believe the objective was ever “conquer ukraine” but it’s hard to settle on exactly what the objectives are.  Some things are obvious - breaking off Donbas and lunhansk.  The water issue with Crimea.  But much otherwise is not.
