Walsh with another hr.  his 16th.

Walsh could be a guy they may want to try in RF. But damn, he's showing some big power this season.

Walsh also made his third relief appearance on the mound the other day. Of course, it's come in part due to blowouts and double-header days, but in 3 IP, he's struck out 4, walked zero, allowed two hits, and one earned run. There could be some genuine utility there.

He also seems like one of those types that could claim a 1B job for a cellar-dweller like KC, Detroit, and punch up a surprising .800 OPS as an 'out of nowhere' journeyman minor leaguer later in their career.

he threw 101 ip for Georgia in the sec with a 3.18 era.

the Angels seem to have unlocked his power.

he has actually played a few games in RF but they seem to be keeping him at 1b with his promo to AA.

He really struggled his first go-round in AA last year, but looks like he's adjusted. If so, he definitely crawls back into the prospect list as a sleeper at the very least.

.297/.389/.638/1.027 through 51 games is nothing to sneeze at, even if it benefited from Cal League. 31 walks, 62 strikeouts, 30 XBH.

Speaking of....I just realized something.

Last year, no Angels minor leaguer hit more than 15 home runs - Jeyson Sanchez. In fact, here were our minor league leaders last year:
15 HR - Jeyson Sanchez
14 HR - Zach Houchins, Jahmai Jones
13 HR - Harrison Wenson
12 HR - Kaleb Cowart
11 HR - Jose Rojas, Brendon Sanger, Jared Walsh, Wade Wass
10 HR - Michael Barash, Richie Fecteau, Ramon Flores, Nolan Fontana, John Shuknecht

This year? We've already eclipsed it by way of Walsh.
16 HR - Walsh
15 HR - Jabari Blash
13 HR - Chris Carter
12 HR - Rymer Liriano
10 HR - Jose Fernandez

Last year, our SB leader had 35. Rengifo is at 26 already.

How about our leader in walks last year vs. this season already, @totdprods

Just curious.

68 BB - Flores (vs. 70 K, .409 OBP) in 493 PA
63 BB - Sherman Johnson (vs. 88 K, .366 OBP) in 467 PA
61 BB - Connor Justus (vs. 110 K, .319 OBP) in 491 PA

This year:

Or how about this....

Angels (all affiliates - including Orem, DSL, and AZL) in 2017:
.263/.343/.383/.726 with 446 HR, 2860 walks vs. 5722 strikeouts, 837 SB vs. 388 CS, and 1243 doubles in 764 games.

This year (all affiliates, not even through a half-season, no short-season teams yet) in 2018:
.260/.347/.408/.755 with 201 HR, 955 walks vs. 2036 strikeouts, 204 SB vs. 99 CS, and 364 doubles in 229 games - around 1/3 of last year.

**cocktail napkin math projections** times it by 3.33 to get our current 229 games up to last year's 764 games, and the Angels minor leaguers are on pace for...
669 HR (+223 more HRs)
1,212 doubles (-31 fewer doubles)
3,180 walks (+320 more walks)
6,780 strikeouts (+1,058 more strikeouts)
679 stolen bases (-158 fewer stolen bases)
330 caught stealing (+58 caught)

Obviously, that's gonna change a whole lot and it's way too early to read much into it, but the three true outcomes approach - more HRs, more BBs, more Ks - seems to be increasing.

It looks like the Angels have already assigned some players to Orem:

http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t519

Notable names include Maitan, Duensing, and Soriano.

Some players listed for the AZL Angels as well:

 http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?cid=404

Aquino, Rivera, Swanda, Soto, Nonie, Sala.

No sign of Deveaux or Knowles yet. I assume both are headed to AZL unless the Angels think Deveaux is so advanced he belongs in Orem. That might also make sense with Adams almost certainly going to AZL.

I'm sure Deveaux will hit Orem.

Feel bad for any pitcher going to the pioneer league.

watching Jonah Wesely for the first time in awhile.  He's gotten very...um...thick.

and by thick, I mean overweight.  He looks tremendously out of shape.  Pretty disappointing as he's got good stuff and nice deception from the left side.  He's literally all over the place though.  2 bb, 2 hits.  Too bad.  He's got a lot of nice potential.  But those 25 walks in 28 ip isn't going to make that extra weight seem helpful.

Maybe it's glandular.

Adell's last at bat speaks to his future.  It's not a big deal but one of those little things.  On a 1-1 count, he swings and misses on a nasty slider off the outer part of the plate.  the next pitch is exactly the same but he takes it without a problem.  Then he hits a hard lined short hop to 3b that looked like a hit off the bat.  He just looks like a major league player at the plate.

Luis Madero with a solid outing. 5ip, 2er, 1bb, 7k.  Acquired for David Hernandez.  3.05 era on the season for burlington as a recently turned 21 yo.  He's one of those guys who's now lost outside of the top 30 but could end up a solid major leaguer.  On or off guy.  Does well or gets pounded.

Jones 2-4, 2b.  3 multi hit games in a row.  .858 ops over his last 19 games not including tonight.

saw a bit of baldoquin tonight. looked very comfortable at the plate.  1/3, bb.  small sample but looked like a different guy than we've seen.

Rengifo 2/5, bb

Rojas, 1/3, hr, 2bb.  even after a horrible slump, he's still OPSing at .857

Bridwell - 5ip, 11h, 6er, 2bb, 5k, hr.  8.68 era at AAA.

Jeremy Rhoades could be a candidate to get called up soon.  Was brutal in his first year of relief last year between A+/AA.  This year he's got a 1.80 era between AA/AAA.  Only 26k in 35ip though but just 5bb and 25h.  Curious about his velo now.

Unfortunately, I think those who felt Bridwell's season last year was a mirage were likely right.  Considering this is the last season in which he can be optioned, I think it's likely he's DFA'd after the season.

Depth-wise, next year we're looking at Ohtani, Heaney, Skaggs, Tropeano, Barria, with Canning, Suarez, Castillo, and Pena all likely in AAA.  This doesn't even include Richards (unknown if he will be re-signed), Shoemaker (not offered a contract?), JC Ramirez (out for half the season), Meyer (could be rehabbed back into a SP or maybe a reliever instead?), etc.

Rhoades has touched 98 this year.  When he was first drafted as a starter, fastball generally sat 92.  This year he's up at 95.

Of your two lists (BB leaders and HR leaders), the more significant one is the BB leaders as it is made up of more prospects than the HR leaders. As great as it is to see the overall improvements, the HR leaders are mostly filled with AAAA players who were recently added for organizational depth. Carter isn't even with the organization anymore. Rivas, Rengifo, and Ward all have a shot at some ML time, and Walsh is definitely playing himself into a very weird "Ohtani-ish" role, and may be able to make it, even if a little older than the curve. It will be interesting to watch what the Angels do with him and how they define a role for him as it pertains to William English.

No doubt. I just like seeing someone in the Halos org put up some gaudy numbers. When I was going through and doing the daily recaps, there was almost always another player - or even multiple players - on the opposing team who already had something like 20+ HRs or 45+ steals and here I was getting excited about Thaiss hitting HR #7 or David Fletcher stealing his 20th base.

I haven't really had much reason to post a daily recap anymore...everyone's watching the farm so intently now, people are aware of what's going on!
