Orange County Register: Angels' Tyler Skaggs makes successful return to Anaheim mound

Recommended Posts

He looked pretty freakin' good too. The radar gun was probably 1 mph too hot, but Skaggs as a top prospect was sitting 93-95, if I remember right it was 92-94 with the Angels before surgery. He's had 20 months off, there shouldn't be as much rust to shake off as others.

I wondered if any of you guys saw the documentary movie "Fastball" narrated by Kevin Costner.  I didn't realize until I saw it on Saturday that the speed of pitches is currently measured just after the pitchers releases it off the mound, 50 feet from home plate.  Given that a fastball loses 1 mph for every foot that it travels that would make Weaver's "fastball" something like 70 mph when it crosses home plate.  Compensating for different measurement techniques over the years, the fastest pitch ever was thrown by Nolan Ryan, late in his career, and in the ninth inning of a game.  It's a pretty fascinating movie if you haven't seen it.  Also fastballs do not rise, some just drop lower more quickly than others.
