Kohn is really the only one who wasn't an obvious demotion here. The bullpen competition narrows down a little more.

No one has won that bullpen spot yet.  Maronde, Cordero have had a poor spring.  Richards is likely the frontrunner with Carp not too far behind.

Well, there's likely going to be 2 open spots until Madson is healthy.

 

But ya, my current guess would be Richards and Carpenter make it. It's not like anyone else has really made a good case to take a spot.

yeah, very curious to see what the last couple spots in the bullpen look like . . . assuming Madson starts the season on the DL, we have:

 

Frieri

Downs

Burnett

Jepsen

Williams

 

last 2 spots: Maronde, Carpenter, Geltz, Taylor, and I guess Richards (but I think they want him stretched out in AAA as our 6th starter)

wow, so maybe there isn't any mystery as to who gets the last 2 spots.  Not like Cordero looks like a realistic option at this point.

I highly doubt that Richards is in the pen.  They need starter depth.

He has done poorly. He has an ERA of 8.44 a WHIP of 2.25 and more walks than strike-outs.

I'm not opposed to this either. My guess is they would wait until April or May to possibly sign one of these guys so their price is driven down a lot.

Having a bullpen which, even at full strength, would include Williams and Carpenter is pretty worrying for me when you factor in how much Downs and Frieri sucked late last year, the fact Madson is coming back from a really long layoff and my reluctance to put too much stock in Jepsen given what he was for so long. Another cheap veteran option at the back of the 'pen looks pretty good right now.
