LA Times: Angels closer Ernesto Frieri hunkers down through tough stretch

Recommended Posts

With all due respect to the author, a "tough stretch" is when you aren't catching breaks - Pitches are barely missing the strike zone, a ball goes off a fielder's glove, a ball is fair by an inch. It isn't when balls are flying into the seats and the Minnesota freaking Twins score five runs off of you in less than one inning.

I'm still wondering where these other pitches are that Frieri supposedly mastered in spring training to add to his repertoire. He still seems like the same one-trick pony that he was a year ago, and the deeper into the season we go, the more hitters tee off on him. The only pitcher I've ever seen who could get away with closing with one pitch is about to retire - and Frieri simply isn't in his class.
