Golf course in LB/LA

Recommended Posts

Looking to help someone out, but I don't golf like I used to and know some of you dudes do. Have friends staying out in Belmont Shores. They are looking to get in a couple rounds within the area. Wanted to get some options and recommendations, please. So far I have been recommended to look at:

-Old Ranch CC

-Big Rec and Little Rec

- Los Verdes

-Trump (this was vague and came with a dumb comment that wasn't golf related)

Lakewood Country Club.

One of the best golf courses in south Los Angeles, Lakewood Country Club was designed by William Bell in 1933 and is located next to the Long Beach Airport, easily accessible from the 605, 405 and 5 freeways. With an abundance of new sand bunkers and several par 3’s that play over 200 yards, this 18 hole, 7,033-yard championship course was voted Los Angeles County Course of the Year in 2005 and 2020.

glad to see Los Verdes on your list. it's a gorgeous course and fun to play, and my favorite course in this area.

the trump course is way overpriced - somewhere north of $300 to play. have not heard good things about it, either.

if price isn't a big deal, go the Pelican Hill in Newport. Beautiful course. Red Hawk in Temecula is also really nice (but also pricey). I'd play both of these long before I'd play trump's place.

^ agreed on Pelican Hill.

Best Course I've played in a while in So Cal is Pechanga's golf course called Journey.  It's one or two bills, and worth every penny.  They really did a great job on that course in that they set it up so that every hole is picturesque and/or challenging.  I think there was one gap between holes that had to be 1/4 mile away to set up to a beautiful downhill drive.

Los Verdes is probably best bang for your buck.  But expect a 6+ hour round.  I really don't get why that place is always so slow to play.

Trump is a great course, but way too overpriced.  It's on par with Wynn in Vegas.  Great course to play, but not worth the $500 to play it.  Torrey Pines is also reaching that level.  I was surprised at what green fees were there.

Pelican Hill and Red Hawk are good ones.  I kind of liked Black Gold in Yorba Linda.  Played Monarch Beach in Dana Point decades ago, and that was a fun course.

Cheap route, at least when I played it decades ago was Anaheim Hills, Diamond Bar GC,

There is also a public course in that area near Valley View Casino called Twin Oaks I think.  For the price ($50-100?), it was worth it.

hilly?  I remember that course being flat and a grip it and rip it type layout.

You want hilly.  Go play Industry Hills.

the holes near the clubhouse at diamond bar are hilly, plus there are a few elevated greens and tee boxes that were also that way.

industry hills is a good track but yeah, there's a lot of up and down movement there.

Like someone posted before, the course in Newport is the best coastal course relatively nearby. The problem is golf has gone nuts in popularity the last year and getting a tee time is more of the problem than finding a nearby course to play.

It's not like a concert where there are scalper tickets. There's nobody selling golf T-Times with a $100 convenience fee. Now that I say that, some asshole is going to start doing that, block booking tee times then scalping.

Anything close to LA? I’m not going to send these dudes to Temecula or Diamond Bar from Long Beach.

Los Verdes is in Palos Verdes and that's a good place to shoot for.

Are your friends people who have a country club membership somewhere? A lot of the country clubs have a reciprocal play policy that would allow them to get in to a place like Riviera. Again, it depends on how much they wanna pay.

Rancho Park is a good track and it's on Pico Blvd. in LA. It used to be the sight of the LA Open. There's a plaque on one of the holes where Arnold Palmer shot a ten or something. It's a good solid course but it's also known as the busiest golf course in California. I've played there 3 or 4 times and think it's worth it.

Brookside in Pasadena is a solid course.  But you have to watch out for UCLA RoseBowl Games/Events.  As they use the course for parking.  Now with the rains coming, you have to be extra careful, since it's a flood zone.

Scholl Canyon is probably one of the better par 3 courses that's located in Glendale.

Industry Hills in City of Industry is a pussified version of it's glorious self when I grew up playing it.  But it's still a challenging course.

If you can get a reservation, Wilson/Harding near Griffith Park.

Another if you can get a reservation, but Rancho Park near Century City is probably the best public in the City area.

None of these are really close to Long Beach though.  Really, as far as good golf courses nearby Long Beach, your only options may be Los Verdes and Trump.

Bullwinkles in Montclair has been returned to the original owners and now is back in business. An indoor and outdoor golf course to challenge the enthusiast.

Why go to Montclair, when you have Golf N Stuff in Norwalk?  If a kid from Reseda can make the trip, the trip from Long Beach should be no problem.

@BrandonOld Ranch in Seal Beach is private, so you won’t be able to get on there.

Pelican Hill in Newport is pretty pricey, but if your friends want a challenge and a terrific view, it’s worth it.

Trump National is a good course and quite difficult.  Kind of a bitch to get to though.

Coyote Hills in Fullerton isn’t bad, but it’s a little drive from the Long Beach area.

These are just a few that I’ve personally played, but I would not recommend Diamond Bar CC.  It’s currently torn up and under a major renovation right now. Don’t waste the trip.
