OC Register: Angels’ Mike Trout will miss 6-8 weeks with calf strain

Recommended Posts

Mike Trout is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a strained right calf, the Angels announced Tuesday.

Trout walked in his only plate appearance in the Angels’ 7-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch and was stranded there before limping off the field as the first inning ended.

Trout was immediately removed from the game. Afterward, Manager Joe Maddon said, “I think it was hurting him pretty badly.”

The three-time American League MVP leads the major leagues in on-base percentage (.462) and OPS (1.086). He missed three games in April with a swollen left elbow after being hit by a pitch. Otherwise, Trout hadn’t missed a game this season.

Juan Lagares took over in center field after Trout was injured. The 32-year-old veteran is the most logical choice to replace Trout for the duration of his injury. He’s a career .254 hitter, known more for his defense than his bat (25 home runs in 728 career games).

However, Lagares was also injured in Monday’s win. He slammed into the center field wall chasing down a home run by Harold Ramirez in the eighth inning and was removed after the inning ended. After the game, Maddon said Lagares injured his toe.

Taylor Ward played the final inning Monday in center field. It was his first experience at the position at the big-league level.

Trout missed approximately six weeks in 2017 with a torn ligament in his left thumb. In 2018, he spent two weeks on IL with inflammation in his right wrist. This will be the third IL stint of his career.

Trout is expected to address reporters later Tuesday.

More to come on this story.
