OC Register: Mike Trout’s streak ends with his first strikeout of the spring in Angels’ loss to Dodgers

Recommended Posts

THE GAME: The Angels lost to the Dodgers 4-3 on Thursday night in Glendale, Ariz. It was the second meeting of the spring between the two teams, who begin their three-game Freeway Series on Sunday at Angel Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Jaime Barria, who got the start because JC Ramírez was taking his turn in a minor league game, gave up two runs in three innings. Barria struck out three and gave up towering homers to Yasiel Puig and Kiké Hernandez. The Angels believe Barria will be able to contribute as a starter in the majors this season, if needed. … Noé Ramírez entered with runners at first and second and no outs, and he escaped the inning, with two strikeouts. He gave up a homer to Corey Seager in his second inning. Ramírez is competing for the last spot in the Angels’ opening day bullpen. … Felix Peña, also in the mix for the last spot, gave up a homer to Cody Bellinger in his inning.

HITTING REPORT: Mike Trout struck out in his first at-bat of the game, against Hyun-Jin Ryu, ending his streak of 44 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout to start the spring. Trout’s longest regular-season streak without a strikeout is 28 plate appearances. Trout had two hits, including an RBI single, later in the game. … Luis Valbuena hit a homer, which was notable because it came off the left-handed Ryu. The Angels have platooned Valbuena. One of the reasons they appear to be keeping Jefry Marte on the roster is to provide a right-handed hitting platoon partner for Valbuena.

DEFENSE REPORT: Zack Cozart moved to second base in the middle of the game. It was his first time playing second in a major league game, in spring or the regular season. Cozart is apparently going to be the Angels’ backup second baseman to start the season, with the team going with Marte as the third player on their three-man bench. … Catcher Carlos Perez, who is out of options and might be auditioning for other teams, threw two balls into center field on stolen bases.

UP NEXT: Angels (John Lamb) vs. A’s (Jesus Luzardo), Friday, 1 p.m. PT, Tempe Diablo Stadium, Fox Sports West/KLAA (830 AM).
