What decade was baseball best for you as a fan? I am not asking when it was best as an Angel fan. I am asking when you thought baseball itself was the most fun to follow. My answer is the 1980s. When I watch clips of baseball from the 80’s it brings me back to what I now consider the height of my love of following the game. I am aware that this could be age related. I was in my late teens and early twenties at that time. I was old enough to know enough about the game and players to really enjoy the game analytically, and still young enough to be a little naively enamored with it emotionally. The algorithm on Instagram has somehow figured this out and i…

TEMPE, Ariz. — Anthony Rendon isn’t about to say what anyone wants to hear if he doesn’t believe it. The Angels’ embattled third baseman spoke to the media for the first time this spring on Monday, and he reiterated his stance that he views baseball as nothing more than a job. “It’s never been a top priority for me,” Rendon said. “It’s a job. I do this to make a living. My faith and my family come first, before this job.” Rendon conceded that it is “a priority” and that’s why he’s still here, and why he continues having medical procedures to repair the injuries he’s suffered playing baseball. “I don’t want to have surgeries,” said Rendon, who had surgery in 2021 and 2…

Next Round of MLB Expansion Thread - Nashville, Portland, Salt Lake, Charlotte, Montreal, Orlando all on radar 1 2 3 4 6

It’s been known for awhile that Manfred wants to add 2 more teams to match what the NHL and NFL currently have, and with the A’s nearing a move to Vegas and the Rays and MLB focused on them remaining in the Tampa area as their current lease nears its expiration, the expansion process could begin pretty soon. Over the past year or two reports of forming ownership groups in multiple markets have come out, with Orlando today being the most recent, along with Charlotte, Nashville, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Montreal. Decided to make an all encompassing thread as there will be a lot of storylines to follow here over the next few years. Who do you want to see become MLB’s…

With a week or so before spring training starts, will the Angels make any significant moves? If so, who? I’m going to say yes and I’ll predict it’s Montgomery. What say you?

TEMPE, Ariz. — Taylor Ward admitted he was somewhat apprehensive as he stepped into the box on Saturday afternoon, but the feeling didn’t last long. “After that first pitch went by, (the feeling) kind of went away,” the Angels outfielder said. Ward faced right-handers Davis Daniel and Travis MacGregor, the first time he’d hit against game-speed pitching since his 2023 season was ended by a fastball to his face in July. The injuries Ward suffered that day led to surgery and a lingering question about whether the mental impact of that moment might have a negative effect on his career. Ward had been hitting since November, but he hadn’t faced a pitcher until Saturday. Da…

Jim Alexander: The NBA’s All-Star Weekend has come and gone, and I’ll confess I didn’t watch a bit of it live (extenuating circumstances, because I was in the car headed home from Riviera both Saturday and Sunday evening). The only part of the weekend I really wanted to see was the Steph-vs.-Sabrina 3-point shootout Saturday night, and that turned out to be a great show. Watching the YouTube clip I was struck most by the sheer joy of their competition, coupled with the understanding of its sociological significance. The game itself? Further evidence that All-Star exhibitions in contact sports are increasingly irrelevant. The NFL finally did the right thing by deep-sixing…

TEMPE, Ariz. — Late in the 2023 season, Griffin Canning was on the mound and Logan O’Hoppe was behind the plate, and the right-hander could tell that much had changed in six months. “My last couple starts with him, I felt we were in a really good rhythm,” Canning said. “I like throwing any pitch, any count, even if the scouting report is saying. ‘We’re going to try to avoid this pitch.’ If I feel like I can throw a certain pitch to a certain guy, I like to do that.” Canning said O’Hoppe developed a better feel for adjusting to game situations in real time, rather than sticking religiously to what had been discussed hours earlier. “It’s remembering how we got a guy out …

TEMPE, Ariz. — Carlos Estévez went into the winter with a very specific plan for improving on what went wrong last season. Although Estévez made the All-Star team and finished with 31 saves in his first season as the Angels closer, the taste that was left in his mouth was the rough finish. Estévez had a 1.88 ERA and he had converted all 23 of his save opportunities through July, but he blew four save chances and had an 8.38 ERA over the final two months. He said last September that he thought he was fatigued because the physical demands of pitching the ninth proved to be more than he was accustomed to in pitching earlier in the game. So this winter, Estévez changed his…

TEMPE, Ariz. — The annual questions surrounding Mike Trout have only grown louder. Trout has enjoyed a Hall of Fame career — albeit one recently stalled by injuries — while the Angels have struggled. The confluence has caused people from coast to coast to question why Trout simply doesn’t ask the Angels for a trade. Trout, who signed a 12-year, $426-million contract five years ago, said it’s not in his nature to “take the easy way out.” “When I signed that contract, I’m loyal,” Trout said before the Angels first full-squad workout of the spring on Monday. “I want to win a championship here. The overall picture of winning a championship or getting to the playoffs here i…

We already knew that the ownership of the Oakland athletics has formally applied to MLB for permission to move the team to Las Vegas. We now know when the issue will be decided. A recommendation on the application will take place in November, with the final vote occurring at an owners' meeting in mid-November. The team needs 75 percent of the teams to vote in favor to proceed. https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/athletics/mlb-sets-date-to-vote-on-as-las-vegas-relocation-source-says-2904744/?utm_campaign=widget&utm_medium=topnews&utm_source=sports&utm_term=MLB sets date to vote on A’s Las Vegas relocation%2C source says

We did career milestones a couple weeks ago which had Reggie's 500th, Pujols' 600th, Carew's 3000th hit and Sutton's 300th win, but now let's focus on best single season Angels accomplishment all-time. I've added some really good seasons by Angels players over the years, so tough choices. Vote!

Victor Rojas and Chuck Richter discuss the club as it enters the first week of spring camp, the latest interview of Arte Moreno and his decision not to sell the club and not wanting to add to payroll, and why despite it all there's reason for optimism for the 2024 Angels. We also took some of your question from the mailbag and added some details on our AngelsWin.com Spring event in Tempe March 7th-10th.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Emotion is the fuel that drives Patrick Sandoval, up until the times when it combusts and causes him to crash. The Angels left-hander has demonstrated throughout his career that he has the stuff to be a frontline starting pitcher. One of the issues that’s kept him from staying at that level consistently, though, is an admitted difficulty keeping his emotions in check when things aren’t going his way. He said he’s worked at it for years, talking to “a lot of people.” This spring, he’s optimistic about maintaining his composure, without losing the parts he wants to keep. “I enjoy the emotional part of the game, big plays and big strikeouts,” Sandoval said.…

TEMPE, Ariz. — Reid Detmers is hoping to smooth out the rollercoaster that the first years of his career have been. The Angels’ 24-year-old lefty has started 53 games over the last two seasons, at times looking like one of the Angels best pitchers and at other times looking like one of the worst. “Consistency is a huge part of this game, which is what I’ve been lacking over the last few years,” Detmers said on Thursday. “I would fall into a rut and not know how to get out of it.” Detmers said he worked over the winter at refining his mechanics, and he finally has an idea of what he needs to do to fix his delivery when it goes awry. “I learned a lot about my mechanics,…

TEMPE, Ariz. — Angels players – not just pitchers and catchers – were scattered across practice fields, bullpen mounds and batting cages Tuesday afternoon. All of that would have been totally routine for spring training, except it was actually a day before the first “official” workout of the spring. Normally on “reporting day,” players have their physicals and a few stragglers might play catch in shorts and T-shirts, but the fields are largely vacant. “Physical day is always the worst because you’re home at 11 and have nothing to do for the rest of the day,” catcher Logan O’Hoppe said after catching bullpen sessions and hitting. “It’s nice to have a workout today. We’r…

By @CartiHalos, AngelsWin.com Columnist With pitchers and catchers having reported, I like to think of the 2024 season as officially underway. While the angels won't play a game for another 9 days, the wheels of baseball are finally churning and as such, I'd like to give my predictions for the Angels and their players. While I'm not the most optimistic person in the world for this specific season, I think it's another season of Angels baseball and I'll never be too mad at getting to watch my Halos. Starting with team predictions... Record: 75-87, 4th in AL West As much as I wanted to put us as a sneaky 80-85 win team, it's not realistic for a team that…

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arte Moreno has no regrets about the change of heart that led him to pull the Angels off the market 13 months ago. The Angels owner said Wednesday that he has no plans to revisit a sale of the team that he’s operated since 2003. “I am here long term,” Moreno said in an interview with the Southern California News Group. “There are some people that came back and some people that knew I had it on the market (in 2022). I basically said it’s not on the market.” Moreno added that it was always possible that someone would come back and make an offer that he couldn’t refuse. “I’m a business person,” he said. “If someone gets really stupid, then you have to go.”…

Let me start off by saying Rendon is a stupid moron with an ugly face and a big butt and his butt smells and he likes to kiss his own butt. Matt Chapman plays 3rd base. He plays 3rd base well. "But tdawg, we already HAVE a 3rd baseman!" Please refer to the top of the page. Also there's some statistical nerd shit that I'd like to share. Fangraphs really likes Matt Chapman in 2024. These are his current ZIPS projections: .240 AVG, 25 HR, .339 wOBA, 117 wRC+, 4.0 WAR. And remember, ZIPS is generally on the conservative side (Taylor pls) when it comes to projections. You know who Fangraphs doesn't like as much for 2024? Cody Bellinger. …

TEMPE, Ariz. — After years of disappointment with the failure to meet high expectations that came from having two generational players on their roster, the Angels no longer have that “burden.” Two-way megastar Shohei Ohtani is gone, having left for the Dodgers, and the Angels did nothing to replace him, either in the starting rotation or in the lineup. Center fielder Mike Trout is coming off his third straight injury-interrupted season. It’s safe to say that no one who doesn’t draw a salary from the Angels has any high expectations for this team heading into Wednesday’s first workout of spring training. Baseball Prospectus projects the Angels for 74 victories, with a 2…

I'm not talking about hitting, but is specially the role of DH a quantifiable skill? With Ohtani as our permanent DH, we haven't had the option of rotating guys in to get them rest. The plan right now seems to be Drury at DH with Trout, Rendon, and maybe Hicks getting some time there. I have concerns with just assuming those guys can DH now and then and be successful. Personally I view DH as a unique skill set and would rather have JD locked in at DH and let the rest figure itself out.
