By Ellen Bell, AngelsWin.com Staff Writer - No series on the Women of Angels Baseball would be complete without Jackie Autry—arguably the most influential female in franchise history. During her time with the Angels, she witnessed the team’s transformation from a small baseball business into a corporate sports franchise. She also had a front row seat to watch a group of home-grown, unknown players develop into World Series Champions. During the All Star Game in New York, Jackie Autry continued her role as honorary American League President and introduced the AL Team Manager, Jim Leyland. Once again, she was at the heart of one of baseball’s biggest events of th…

Angels pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training on Feb. 13. As we count down the days until camp begins, we are going through the various position groups to give a breakdown of where the roster stands. Today, the starting rotation. Previously: outfielders, infielders, catchers. 2023 RECAP After an encouraging season in which the starters ranked sixth in the majors in ERA, they fell to 19th with a 4.47 ERA in 2023. Shohei Ohtani slipped to a 3.14 ERA and he made only 23 starts before going down with a torn UCL. Left-handers Patrick Sandoval (4.11 ERA), Reid Detmers (4.48) and Tyler Anderson (5.43), who had been an All-Star with the Dodgers in 2022,…

It feels like the Angels are well behind pretty much every other organization in the league when it comes to acquiring pitchers. We don't draft pitchers high (Canning is the only top 2 round pick in the Eppler draft era), we don't seem to invest any international pool money in them (sans Ohtani), we don't spend money on them in free agency (never given a 9 figure contract to a pitcher), and we seem very hesitant to part with what is considered fair value in trades for pitchers. I get the sense that our organization just simply doesn't place a lot of value into pitchers. Why do we seem so hesitant to invest assets into acquiring pitchers by any means compared to every o…

by Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter There are few qualities better suited for the Major League grind than the ability to overcome adversity on a daily basis. We see this time and time again as Major Leaguers regularly fall into slumps and prospects slip into doubt as the game stays unpromised to those who do not work for it. 80 grade tools suddenly become meaningless if the athlete possessing such talent does not have the fortitude to apply himself against the pressures presented by the game. Angels pitching prospect Zach Joyce is no stranger to overcoming severe adversity as his journey through baseball has seen him overcome the heaviest challenge a person c…

As we count down the days until camp begins, we are going through the various position groups to give a breakdown of where the roster stands. Today, the bullpen. Previously: starting rotation, outfielders, infielders, catchers. 2023 RECAP The Angels have spent significant money on their bullpen in recent years – giving out multiyear deals to free agents Carlos Estévez, Ryan Tepera and Aaron Loup – and re-signing Raisel Iglesias to a four-year deal. It hasn’t worked very well and 2023 was another disappointing year for the bullpen, which ranked 26th in the majors with a 4.88 ERA. Tepera wa…

By Jonathon Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer So its February 5th and pitchers and catchers report in less than two weeks. Let's take stock of Perry's moves and where the Angels might go from here. Perry's made no major acquisitions - no starting pitchers, no positions players, only bench and bullpen guys. The team as it stands looks to be something like this (with likely 26-man roster in bold and potential first call-ups in parentheses): C - O'Hoppe, Thaiss (Mejia, Wallach) IF - Schanuel, Drury, Neto, Rendon, Rengifo, Sano (White, Stefanic, Soto, Lopez, Martin) OF - Trout, Ward, Moniak, Adell, Hicks (Dozier, Calhoun) SP - Detmers, Sandov…

ANAHEIM — Reliever José Cisnero on Saturday to a $1.75 million, one-year contract with the Angels. A right-hander who turns 35 on April 11, Cisnero was 3-4 with two saves and a 5.31 ERA in 63 games for Detroit last season, striking out 70 and walking 25 in 59⅓ innings. He allowed a career-high 10 home runs, up from six in 2022. Cisnero averaged 94.4 mph with his fastball, up from 93.4 mph in 2022 but down from 96.4 mph in 2019. He is 13-17 with a 3.99 ERA in seven seasons with the Houston Astros (2013-14) and the Tigers (2019-23), striking out 275 and walking 130 in 259⅓ innings. Emphasis on 2024 only. Meaning, picking the first doesn't mean the Angels won't compete in 2025; picking the second doesn't mean Trout doesn't bounce back in 2025. I'm guessing most pick the second, but I'm actually picking the first - at least for 2024. More than anything, I want to see some semblance of the old Trout back, and feel that if he doesn't bounce back this year, he never will. Maybe it is because I don't have much expectations for contention this year and can another two or three years. I just feel like seeing Trout back would be immensely enjoyable.

Perhaps old news - but I just saw it on NetFlix - get documentary -- our pal (formerly. Pinetar here - Rob Goldman - author of "when they were Angels' and also a book about. Nolan Ryan is in the documentary quite. a bit - talking about his. days as an Angels bat boy and about watching Nolan Ryan Anyway, it's a great documentary about one of. MLB's greatest pitchers of all time, It talks about Ryan's Texas roots -- and the documentary made me more understanding why it's OK for Nolan Ryan to be wearing a. Texas cap in the HOF -- even if his best seasons and best stats. were during his Angels years -- although. - as the documentary points out -- Ryan had some great…

Installment 11: “When Mike Trout reported to spring training in mid-February 2020, he had more career WAR through the age of 27 than any player in Major League Baseball history.” —Me OR "Since 2014, Mike Trout's 151 home runs are the fourth most in baseball." —Fun Fact on the Angels’ Stadium scoreboard, May 2018 1. When a game begins, Mike Trout is in center field. In the top of just one first inning, he: kicks grass, smoothes kicked grass, stares into his glove, fiddles with straps of glove, removes glove, checks the count on the left-field scoreboard, checks the hitter’s stats on the right-field scoreboard, randomly salutes at nothing, checks his b…

I thought we needed a thread where we can bring attention to some random historical stuff from yesteryear or stuff that just pops up in the present day that you would like to bring attention to. I'll kick this thread off with Darin Erstad regarding his season in 2000.

I know you all have your favorite NFL teams and some of you ( @Chuck ) hate the 49ers, but I just wanted to shine a light on this to maybe persuade you all to supporting the 49ers in the Superbowl. Brock Purdy is pretty known for being Mr. Irrelevant of the 2022 Draft, and now leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl this year after a disastrous UCL injury in the NFC championship game against the Eagles in 2022. UCL injuries are very rare in the NFL, unlike in Baseball. His Dad, Shawn, was an Angels draft pick, played for the Angels minor leagues for a few years and unfortunately also had UCL issues, which derailed his career as TJ wasn't as common in the 1990's as it is …

In This Space, we have often referred to Southern California as the most diverse (and occasionally most fickle) sports market on this continent. We have two of most every team in every major team sport. We have two major conference college programs operating cheek-to-jowl with major league franchises. We get cameo appearances from almost all of the itinerant sports circuits, starting with this Sunday’s NASCAR Clash in the Coliseum (although it would be nice if the tennis tours would again land in the nation’s second-largest market in the summertime, rather than merely touching down in Indian Wells in March). Also, dare I point out, we will have our third Olympic Games f…

Most people here will likely want to skip this, it's stat nerd heavy, but if you are interested in stuff like that you'd be well served to read this excellent article at FG... https://library.fangraphs.com/pitching/stuff-location-and-pitching-primer/ This post leans heavily on the information in this article but for anyone not wanting to read the long form or that doesn't want to have to look at a bunch of graphs you can basically focus on these three excerpts/summaries on the three major pitch modeling components. Stuff+ Stuff+ looks only at the physical characteristics of a pitch. Important features include, but are not limited to, release point, velo…

Griffin Canning, Angels Theoretically, a sleeper is someone who has a high probability of out-earning their consensus ranking. The irony is that because these inherent probabilities are already incorporated into my ranking list, it becomes difficult to select someone who will further exceed this baked-in potential upside. In Canning’s case, it’s been a litany of injuries that has suppressed his dynasty value and not a question of skills. Canning reached 127 innings in 2023 after previously never amassing 100 innings in a season, holding opponents to an ERA of 4.32. All estimators suggest that his true talent was closer to 4.00. Canning averaged a reasonable 94.5 mph…

There's been much chatter in fandom and the media that Logan's going to take off. I'm concerned that he may face undue pressure. What do you think about this? Is it any different from any pressure of our top picks? Wood, Adell, etc.?

ANAHEIM — The Angels and outfielder Aaron Hicks have agreed to a one-year, $740,000 contract. The Angels announced the deal with the former Long Beach Wilson High standout on Monday. Hicks’ salary is the major league minimum and will be offset against the $9.5 million he was guaranteed by the New York Yankees, who released him from a $70 million, seven-year contract that also assured a $9.5 million salary in 2025 plus a $1 million buyout of a 2026 club option. Hicks, 34, was released by the Yankees after slashing just .188/.263/.261 through the first two months of the 2023 season but he improved to .275/.381/.425 in 65 games for the Baltimore Orioles. He batted .253 wi…

As we count down the days until camp begins, we are going through the various position groups to give a breakdown of where the roster stands. Today, the infielders. Previously: Outfielders, catchers. 2023 RECAP The Angels built their roster with enough extra players to get them through some injuries, but it wasn’t enough for what they endured. Third baseman Anthony Rendon, first baseman Jared Walsh, second baseman Brandon Drury, utility infielder Gio Urshela and shortstop Zach Neto (who began the season at Triple-A) all spent more than a month on the injured list. David Fletcher spent mos…

Estevez (R) Stephenson (R) Garcia (R) Soriano (R) Joyce (R) Cimber (R) Suarez (L) Looks like they need another lefty...Moore come on down. Or perhaps they have confidence in Ingram to be a lefty option in the pen? Or if they sign a starter one of their lefty rotation arms likely goes to the pen. Does Anderson end up there? Sandoval / Detmers / Canning and Silseth are in the rotation, right?

Sept. 17, 1984: Reggie hits No. 500 Aug. 4, 1985: Carew collects No. 3,000 June 18, 1986: Sutton wins No. 300 June 3, 2017: Pujols clubs No. 600 For three consecutive seasons, one each year, Angels fans were treated to a player reaching a Hall of Fame milestone while wearing an Angels uniform. More impressively, each accomplished the feat at Anaheim Stadium. First up was Reggie Jackson. The self-proclaimed “straw that stirs the drink” arrived in Anaheim two years earlier, signing as a free agent and bringing with him 425 home runs in 14 previous seasons. Jackson immediately delivered to his billing, whopping 39 home ru…
