"Today is the first day of the last season of one of the most remarkable careers in sports! I’m talking about my husband @albertpujols who since the time he was a child would eat, sleep, and breath this sport. I have had the privilege to walk out 23 years of this baseball journey and it is with such a full heart that I speak a blessing over him as he finishes this good race! I’ve never known anyone more dedicated, disciplined and consistent than Albert. He has loved the game, he has hurt for the game, and he made sacrifices for this game as if it was his own child. He has grown from just a zealous young man into a confident leader who so many look up to. We by no means ar…

Hey smart guys got a question for you. A couple of assumptions here, one we are going to a 5 man rotation and the other is we can carry one less pitcher because Shohei was a two way player, although I am not sure that will impact the number of pitchers in the pen. Anyway, here is my question, do you see a chance our starters will be asked to go a little deeper into games as they are maturing? Or the fact they are pitching in a traditional 5 man rotation, would that limit innings per start because they will be asked to start a few more games over the course of a season? Only a hand full of pitchers in the majors averaged 6 innings per start last year. Canning averaged t…

Shortstop Joswa Lugo, a Dominican shortstop with a powerful bat, was the Angels’ top signee among the 15 players they inked on the first day of the international signing period on Monday. Lugo, 16, reportedly received a $2.3 million signing bonus, the largest among the Angels’ signees. Lugo was rated the No. 8 international prospect in this year’s class by Baseball America, and he was No. 37 by MLB Pipeline. The Angels also spent $685,000 on Dominican outfielder Hayden Alvarez and $575,000 for Dominican shortstop Greylin De La Paz. Alvarez was ranked No. 63 and De La Paz was ranked No. 70 by Baseball America. The Angels also signed No. 87 Humberto Tibieri, a catcher fro…

Robert Stephenson said he doesn’t consider the new pitch that turned around his season to be a new pitch at all. The Angels freshly-signed reliever did acknowledge it was different, though. “I still call it a slider,” Stephenson said of the pitch sometimes identified as a cutter. “It’s the exact same grip I use with my slider before. I just released a little bit different now so might move a little differently, but it’s still the same grip.” Whatever you call the tweak the Tampa Bay Rays made with Stephenson after they acquired him last June, it seems to be largely responsible for the three-year, $33-million deal that became official on Tuesday. Stephenson, 30, had a …

After listening to the Angelswin.com Podcast this past weekend, I know the Angels haven't done much and aren't expected to, but then they signed Stephenson, so maybe they're still in the mix for some other free agents? Some of this is indeed Boras' mouthpiece, Heyman spouting random "rumors" but then Passan this AM echoed him. So I wondered what the Angels need to add to be in the playoff mix, if they're gonna add. Losing Ohtani hurts the pitching staff and saps some power from the middle of the lineup, and replacing him does need to happen. But this doesn't have to be a DH. The Angels have a few young guys that need to develop in O'Hoppe, Moniak, Neto, Schanue…

by Ryan Falla The Angels have found themselves well short on veritable game changers as the last decade has seen them skid through season after season with disappointing results. While most look for answers at the Major League level with free agency and the trade market the most sustainable path towards extended success, aside from ownership, rests within the talent depth at the minor league level. Prospect talent may not be the most immediate answer to Major League woes, but for an organization like the Angels it is the most necessary. There is more opportunity for long term organizational success found within the Angels prospect depth than in what we've seen in ma…

I built a model to project pitching wOBA for figuring out who to pick in fantasy baseball last year (pitching is more difficult to project than hitting for fantasy baseball). The model outperforms simply using the previous years' xwOBA to project the current season. Just figured I'd share it here in case anyone is interested. It did pretty well for me last year - identified Justin Steele and Kyle Bradish for me and I went 17-4-2 and won the championship (subtle brag). We'll see how it does this year. As far as pitchers it suggests the Angels might benefit in targeting, Domingo German is an interesting projection and is pretty much the only guy in the top 30 pr…

Julio Urias! Give the kid a 3-year deal for like 12 million. He’s gonna miss time for the suspension, but will slot in nicely next year. Add Trevor Bauer and now we have a rotation: Bauer, Urias, Detmers, Canning, Sandoval

Think I recall teams were limited to four jerseys in 2023 - home, road, alternate, and city connect (if eligible, it was required to be an option even if not used, I think). Would be cool if Angels ditched all red for some throwbacks for the fourth next year. (Sorry if this was mentioned elsewhere, not reading as much here lately)

by Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter Much of the Angels tenure post-2010 has seen the organization marred with a reputation lacking in developmental allure. Through most of the last decade Anaheim has suffered from a lack of true talent depth, often seeing the organization showcase one or two top end talents each year. However, reputations within Anaheim have begun to shift as the quality of prospects has seen steady improvement in recent years due to drafting efforts by GM Perry Minasian. The Angels recent Top 10 Prospect list features a few draft picks from 2023, one of those vaunted picks being future star pitcher Barrett Kent. The 19 year old right handers…

Angels pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training on Feb. 13. As we count down the days until camp begins, we are going through the various position groups to give a breakdown of where the roster stands. Today, the outfield. 2023 RECAP Center fielder Mike Trout missed half the season with a fractured hamate bone, marking the third time in the last three years that the three-time American League MVP has missed significant time with an injury. He was just starting to heat up at the plate before he got hurt, after getting off to the worst start of his career. He finished the season with a .263 batting average, 18 home runs and an .858 OPS in 82 games. …

Mike Scioscia just shot himself in the foot. I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese baseball culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an a******. If you screw someone over in Japan by shitty managing, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance. What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to support the Angels, nor will they watch any games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Mike Scioscia has alienated an entire market with this move. Mike Scioscia, publicly apol…

The Angels have reportedly agreed to terms with relief pitcher Robert Stephenson on a three-year deal, adding another name to their bullpen depth chart. Terms of the deal, which reportedly includes an option, were not available. The Angels previously signed right-handers Luis Garcia and Adam Cimber and left-hander Adam Kolarek to major league deals this winter, although Kolarek is now on the Triple-A roster after being removed from the 40-man roster. Stephenson, whose deal is reportedly pending a physical, posted a 3.10 ERA last season, splitting the year between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Tampa Bay Rays. He was traded to the Rays in early June, and had a 2.35 ERA …

by @CartiHalos, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter Friday night, the Angels revealed their biggest signing yet - right-handed relief pitcher Robert Stephenson. Stephenson's career has been an interesting one to look at, but with a 2023 that was nothing short of monumental and several other outstanding years, it's fair to say his impact should be felt in the Angels bullpen come opening day. He first came onto the scene in 2016 as a Starting pitcher, starting 22 rather unimpressive games for the Reds from 2016-2018. Although his numbers from these years are nothing to gawk at (An 81 ERA+ and 5.50 FIP), the flashes of his ability to fool hitters shined through at times.…

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-25/sports-broadcaster-diamond-faces-8-6-billion-debt-reckoning This is potentially very big news for the Angels and could affect payroll for awhile going forward. They may have to negotiate a lower contract and/or may have to find a different broadcast partner. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not an expert on this, but it seems like it may be a big story going forward.

Please Perry… please… he was so good in the WBC. Angels probably would want him as a reliever, but…even as a starter.

https://pitcherlist.com/2024-fantasy-baseball-sleepers-busts-los-angeles-angels/ I really like their take on Silseth. And I do think Rendon would be greatly valuable with health, I'm just not willing to make any bets on him being healthy. But Silseth, I get the feeling is about to make the leap from being a back end or swing starter to something quite a bit more.

By @ryanmfalla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter It's not everyday you find an ace-caliber high schooler bulldogging his way to top prospect rankings just one year out of high school, and it's even less often that you find that arm in the 11th round of the draft. The Angels latest top prospect, RHP Caden Dana, came into the Angels organization as a high schooler in the 2022 draft, and though he’s pitched less than 80 innings with the organization he’s already established himself atop the leaderboards. Though he has pitched just one full professional season in the minors the quality of his stuff, as well as his physical and mental makeup, has firmly entrenched his status …

The Angels on Thursday agreed to one-year deals with pitchers Griffin Canning, Patrick Sandoval and José Quijada and infielder Luis Rengifo, avoiding arbitration. They have not yet agreed to terms with their two other arbitration-eligible players, outfielder Taylor Ward and left-hander José Suarez. Thursday was the deadline for teams to reach agreements with arbitration-eligible players before exchanging figures for hearings to be held next month. Although negotiations can continue up until the start of the hearing, most teams have recently adopted a “file and trial” policy that ends negotiations past the point that figures are exchanged. Last year the Angels went to t…

Everybody loves a good comeback story, whether its Angel fans looking for a 2024 that will put the doubters in place, or the many professional ballplayers grinding under the radar for a shot at career revitalizations come next season. The 2024 Angels looks to be a launchpad for those on the fringes looking for a way in after an offseason that saw the organization sign multiple free agents out of Indyball on minor league contracts. The general baseball media tends to gloss over minor league free agent deals with most of them amounting to low impact depth offerings. However, every once in a while a team truly does strike upon impact talent existing on the fringes of profess…

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/01/mlbtr-poll-american-league-west-favorite.html Los Angeles Angels – 2022 record: 73-89, projected 2023 fWAR: 40.4 The Angels have continued to disappoint despite having two of the best players on the planet on their roster. That was the case again in 2022, as Mike Trout was limited by injury to just 119 games but still produced 6.0 fWAR while Shohei Ohtani produced 3.8 fWAR at the plate and 5.6 on the mound. Still, the club fell out of contention in the summer and never really made it back. Despite years of falling short of expectations, there are reasons to think 2023 could actually be the year they deliver. They didn’…

While I wasn’t happy with the hiring, mainly because of off the field stuff that I remembered and his age. But I was encouraged by the staff rumored solid mix of veterans and young coaches. There was no mention of a pitching coach or bullpen coach that I saw Two former Angels to me fit the bill. Dan Haren has been a pitching strategist for the D’Backs for the past few seasons and was a young pitcher for the A’s while Washington was on the staff. And of course if they could pry Percy away from UCR. Don’t know if he’d do that for the bullpen job, but perhaps as a pitching coach .
