Do All-Star Games Still Have Value to Fans?

Recommended Posts

After last night’s NBA ASG, where many of the players said they didn’t care, should the game be scrubbed altogether.

The other leagues have changed formatting but the interest is lukewarm.

One of the best gifts I ever got was a program from my uncle who went to the 80 MLB game at Dodger Stadium.

with national TV, people seem to get enough of these players unlike way back when (even before TV).

Do you think they are salvageable?

i like what the nhl has done with a 3 on 3 setup. lots of skating and letting the best players do their thing with room to operate.

i applaud what the nfl is attempting, but i don't find it appealing. it probably appeals to a younger audience.

the mlb is too pitching heavy. fans want to see hitters blast off at the game, not a tight pitching matchup. the home run contest helps, but the game itself isn't terribly interesting.

the nba is a mess. haven't watched their all star game in years.

The only All-Star game that mattered was MLB. And with interleague play it lost its luster. Get rid of interleague and it will be more fun again.

The other games are really hard to do well because effort matters so much. In baseball the pitcher and hitter are really the only ones who need to try. Basically it requires the players to try for about 10% of the game. The other sports require effort from everyone all the time or else it doesn't look like an actual game that counts.

I like the All Star game, it resembles the sport unlike the complete joke the other leagues present.

What I do think can dissappear and not return is the home run derby, or at the very least the terrible broadcast format they present that makes it unwatchable. Putting the players on a clock and not pitch count makes it so no hit is tracked well for the audience. They should do a better job with track man statistics and use that to determine total distance as part of the awards.

But the All Star game, itself, looks and plays like baseball and represents the top tier players well using coaching picks.

I'm glad that I went to the Pro Bowl the last year before they started the flag football nonsense. Even without tackling, it was entertaining, and what was run resembled actual plays. I'm not going to pay to see a sport that I played on the playground in the seventh grade.

I went to the NHL All Star Game when it was played here. I agree with your comments. The three-on-three setup is used in overtime games, so it doesn't feel like a gimmick (shootouts, anyone?). It also allows for more scoring with more open ice.
