Mike Trout through 40 games played:

2012: .354/.412/.565

2013: .293/.364/.549

2014: .269/.357/.531

2015: .288/.386/.555

2016: .320/.408/.567

2017: .350/.466/.757

2018: .315/.450/.650

2019: .278/.449/.541

2020: .303/.400/.665

2021: .333/.466/.624 (36 games)

2022: .319/.425/.674

2023: .274/.361/.490

Translation: Trout is off to the worst start (through 40 games) of any season in his career, with a career low in SLG - the first time it has been under .500 at this point in the year. Second lowest BA and OBP, after 2014 - which was the worst full season of his career, at least discounting 2022 (though his first MVP season).

Too many days off throws off his timing.

Since April 30: .185/.267/.259, 1 HR in 60 PA, 6.7 BB%, 43 wRC+

What is very strange about Trout's season is that his BB% is a career worst (10.0%), and usually walk rate is one of the last things to go. This implies that maybe we're not seeing aging as much as him pressing and/or simply off, or out of sorts. Meaning, it might be mostly or entirely in his head.

Last year his walk rate was also very low, the second worst of his career. I think a lot of that was him pressing too hard after the team's mega-slump, and he never really recovered it. He was crushing the ball before the slump (see above), and then was terrible for long stretches. So basically 2023 has been a continuation of last year's slumping Trout.

I do think a lot of it is the high fastballs, but in the past he's always found a way to adjust. We're now a full calendar year into him essentially not being able to adjust.

All joking aside, it might turn out that way. The story isn't over, though, but it sure seems like we're seeing Trout in a similar place as Pujols was in 2011-12. Let's hope he can bounce back, or at least have a slower decline.
