L.A. Times:

PITCHING PLANS: Manager Mike Scioscia said left-hander Hector Santiago, whose spot in the rotation comes up Tuesday, is being pushed back to Thursday. Left-hander C.J. Wilson is scheduled to start the series opener in Houston with Jered Weaver to follow Wednesday.

Going forward, that sets up our #5 spot for four more games, Sept 6 at Minnesota, Sept 11 at Texas, Sept 16 vs Seattle (in Anaheim), and Sept 21 at home vs Texas.

If everything shakes out normally, here are the pitchers for the upcoming series:

Houston (away): Wilson, Weaver

Minnesota (away): Santiago, Shoemaker, #5, Wilson

Cleveland (makeup game): Weaver

Texas (away): Santiago, Shoemaker, #5

Houston (home): Wilson, Weaver, Santiago

Seattle (home): Shoemaker, #5, Wilson, Weaver

Texas (home): Santiago, Shoemaker, #5

Oakland (away): Wilson, Weaver, Santiago

Seattle (away, after an off-day): Shoemaker, Wilson, Weaver

If the Angels have clinched before the last Mariners series they need to consider resting Wilson and Weaver even though they will have extra time to prepare for the playoffs. If they drop to Wildcard then it means Santiago pitches that game. They need to win the division.

Agreed that Weaver and Shoe need to start ALDS games 1 and 2 here, assuming they were to go on to win the AL West.

Shoe could still pitch in his spot in the closing regular season series at Seattle, and still make his regularly scheduled ALDS start.

Maybe limit Weaver to 30 pitches in his tune up start that Sunday?

Or Shoemaker on three days' rest. But you're right, they need to win the West to avoid those distasteful decisions.

There is no way Weaver pitches on last day of the regular season, I am guess, some rookie will start that game.

The A's play the Rangers in a 4 game set to end their season. Scioscia is going to make his decisions based on the Athletics or mariners position in the standings the last three games. If the Angels need to win on game 162 then Weaver pitches.
