Howie Kendrick, who spent the first 13 years of his career with the Angels and then two with the Dodgers, announced his retirement on Monday afternoon.

Kendrick made the announcement in a post on his Instagram account.

Kendrick, 37, spent his final two seasons with the Washington Nationals, helping them to the World Series title in 2019 and hitting .275 in 25 games during the shortened 2020 season.

He finishes his career with parts of 15 seasons in the majors, collecting 1,747 hits with a .294 average.

The Angels drafted Kendrick in 2002 out of St. Johns River Community College in Florida, and he reached the big leagues in 2006.

A second baseman for most of his time in Anaheim, Kendrick played nine big-league seasons with the Angels, hitting .292 and making the All-Star team in 2011. The Angels traded him after the 2014 season, sending him to the Dodgers in exchange for Andrew Heaney, who they had just acquired from the Miami Marlins.

Kendrick spent two seasons with the Dodgers, hitting .274 in 2015 and 2016.

His most memorable game at Dodger Stadium, however, came in 2019, as a member of the Nationals. Kendrick’s grand slam in the 10th inning, against Joe Kelly, led the Nationals to a victory in Game 5 of the division series.

A few weeks later Kendrick hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning of Game 7 of the World Series, leading the Nationals to a victory over the Houston Astros.
