The Angels signed slick-fielding infielder John McDonald to a Minor League contract on Thursday, giving the 39-year-old an invitation to Spring Training and presumably a chance to compete for the utility-infield spot. View the full article

I get it, he's the best pitcher in the game. Young, mature, All-American, etc. I have no problem with the signing itself. He's the kind of guy you give a long-term contract to. However, the contract is baffling to me. Not because of the AAV, but for two other reasons. 1. Timing. 2. Opt out. 1. Timing The Dodgers don't want to risk him hitting the open market where his value might be driven up further, so they locked him up. But locking up a player before he's actually a free agent is all about risk allocation. When the Dodgers sign a guy to a long-term guaranteed extension, they take on the risk that he's going to be hurt or underperform in the year(s) b…

By Robert Cunningham, AngelsWin.com Staff Writer - No, this is not a new imported Japanese beer brand (although if the Angels sign Masahiro it ought to be a marketing opportunity right?). However it is the unintended and undesirable effect that Masahiro Tanaka is having on the current off-season trade market. The entire pitching side of the trade market is at a virtual standstill (no wonder Tanaka likes the Los Angeles area… he’d be at home on the 405). In addition there are certainly teams out there that have proposed trade packages on hold until they can determine if they will be able to sign a particular player (the contingency trades). Also Tanaka’s ev…

@jonmorosi: Angels owner Arte Moreno told me he is "very optimistic" about deal with Anaheim to keep team at Angel Stadium into mid-2030s. @jonmorosi: Moreno said deal being discussed involves team paying for infrastructure improvements and receiving revenue from redevelopment in area. @jonmorosi: Arte Moreno said Angels are still trying to improve pitching; they did not meet with Tanaka but he confirmed talks with Matt Garza.

http://aldengonzalez.mlblogs.com/2014/01/15/do-the-angels-need-another-starter/ Honestly a lot better than I would have imagined. I still would like another starter to avoid the depth problems we will have if a guy gets hurt. We need to go into spring with a solid 5, skaggs in aaa and to be used as a spot starter, and Mulder solely as a possible nice surprise

According to Michael C Jones of Yahoo Sports. Key quotes: Is Tanaka the answer? In short, maybe, but it's not worth finding out the answer. .... Yes, Tanaka could be a game-changer for a team that's set up to win now like the Angels, but if signing him turns out to be the wrong move, then the Halos will be 0-for-3 (after missing the playoffs in years in which they signed Pujols and Hamilton in 2012 and 2013) on big-name signings over the last three seasons. That kind of risk-reward scenario is too much to take on for a team that's already swung for the fences and missed in a big way. Bringing in one player won't solve the depth issues that plagued the…

I attended the Burlington Bees Winter Banquet the other night and listened to Jerry Dipoto, as he was the Keynote Speaker. Just some of the thoughts I took away from listening to him. He openly admitted that pitching was terrible last weekend and he has done everything to correct the problem. Seemed very excited about the improved bullpen. Talked a lot about all of the star power, but the lack of results with them. He said Josh has gained about 20 pounds this off season and is back to what he weighed in his MVP season, and Albert is healthy. Seemed very optimistic. Said one reason he signed Ibanez was to preserve the first round pick. He stated a lot that he is tryin…

The Angels offer a prime location, boast a star-studded team and have available funds. And according to a weekend report from the Japanese publication Sports Hochi, that combination has made them among three favorites -- along with the Yankees and Dodgers -- to land coveted 25-year-old right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. Those of you who were with us back in 2010 when we signed Hideki Matsui may remember I was interviewed from Wayne Graczyk from the Japan Times for an Angels fan take of having Godzilla on our team. I then in turn interviewed him later on for his work with JapanBall.com and life as an American reporter in Japan working for the Japan Times. (I'll post those links later, I'm mobile) Anyhow, I reached out to Wayne to see if he can add anything new on Tanaka that we don't already know and he had this to say. Hi Chuck: Nice to hear from you. I really can't add much more about Tanaka, other than he has all the tools & all the pitches necessary to make him a successful ma…

by Geoff Stoddart, AngelsWin.com Director of Social Media With each passing year, our AngelsWin.com Spring Training Fanfest becomes more and more special. The number of fans that make the trip out to Tempe increases, while our special guests are popular fan favorites. In the last two years alone we’ve welcomed Arte Moreno, Tim Salmon, Jerry Dipoto, Tim Mead and Victor Rojas, to name just a few. Today we are extremely excited to announce that Angels' General Manager, Jerry Dipoto, will once again be joining us for the AngelsWin.com Spring Training Fanfest! I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Jerry at last year’s event. He was engaging, candid, informat…

The ESPN article about Bosch's comments on 60 minutes show that there is a clear benefit derived from those who have "enhanced." Actual benefits get called into question from time to time by those who wonder whether anything is actually achieved from such use. The relevant comments are in his descriptions of AFraud's remarks. He talks about AFraud's involvement in what he was taking, that he would carefully study the products trying to get maximum results and texted him after a 3 rbi day with a comment "Really good. Explosive." So what I see from that is that Rodriguez is able to recognize the results from a recent injection and recognize its results compared to others he…

When a GM tries to sway a free agent to his club, could (or should) he also demean another area or try to dissaude against going somewhere else? Would romancing a free agent be just about hyping your area or does anything go?

I am a little confused. I know AROD has been suspended and many on here say the Yanks now have 25 more million to spend under the cap because of the suspension. But this is my question. The salary cap is based not on what you are paid this year, but the AAV for the length of the contract. AROD's contract was not voided. Yes, the Yankees do not have pay AROD this year, but dont' they still owe him like another 100 million? Wouldn't that 100 million apply toward the cap? Can someone help clarify this for me?

If you had to turn in a ballot, who would you vote for? Any player that gets 75% of the vote would make the HOF. It will be interesting how the Angelswin results compare to the official results. ***BBWAA results are in bold *** Results are in! From this loaded ballot, we would have inducted a grand total of THREE players. That's it. Maddux: 100% 97.7% Glavine: 83.3% 91.9% Thomas: 81.0% 83.7% Piazza: 71.4% 62.2% Biggio: 61.9% 74.8% Bagwell: 50.0% 54.3% Raines: 47.6% 46.% Martinez: 38.1% 25.2% Smith: 33.3% 29.9% Clemens: 31.0% 35.4% Bonds: 28.6% 34.7% Mussina: 28.6% 20.3% Schilling: 23.8% 29.2% Morris: 19.1% 61.5% Trammell: 16.7% 20.8% McGwire: 11.9% 10.…
