...instead of Scherzer, in an elimination game.

Career batting averages of selected A's players vs Fister:

Callaspo, .353

Cespedes, .500

Crisp, .368

Donaldson, .750

Lowrie, .333

Moss, .600

In his only appearance this year against the A's, Fister lasted just five innings and gave up seven runs on 13 hits.

Short rest is usually a disaster for most pitchers. I thought Mattingly was super lucky it worked out yesterday. I don't think Leyland could make a bad decision here being down 2-1. Mattingly made a dumb move because he had a one game buffer

Leyland has been in a spot like this before and blew it in the 2006 World Series. After a rain delay pushed Game 4 back, Leyland elected to start Verlander in Game 5 with the Tigers down 3-1 in the series instead of starting Kenny Rogers, who was the team's best pitcher at the time.

Verlander pitched well, but not well enough to win and the Tigers lost the series. Rogers, the Tigers' best chance at winning saw the field for only one game -- the only game they won in the series -- and it would be six years before the Tigers would get back to the World Series.
