THE GAME: The Angels scored 10 runs in the second inning on their way to a 15-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs in a Cactus League game on Monday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Griffin Canning gave up three runs in five innings on 70 pitches. The break between the second and third was so long for Canning that he went down to the bullpen to throw while the Angels were hitting. He returned to the mound and walked the first hitter on his way to giving up two runs. Canning did not allow a run in either of his last two innings. “Overall today was a good reminder not to pitch frustrated,” Canning said. “I feel like I found something a little the last inning.” Canning also said that he has continued to have no issue with the elbow problem that affected him last spring. “Physically I feel really good.” … Left-hander Patrick Sandoval pitched two scoreless innings but then gave up three runs in his third inning. Sandoval projects as a starter in the long-term but the Angels are also considering him for a role in the bullpen to start the season. He’s allowed six earned runs in 13 innings this spring.

HITTING REPORT: Mike Trout reached on an infield single when his hard ground ball was stopped by Kris Bryant. In his next trip, he drilled a double into the gap into right-center. … Justin Upton had two doubles, one off the center field fence and one down the left field line. Upton is 11 for 30 this spring, with three doubles and three homers. … Anthony Rendon hit his second homer of the spring, an opposite-field shot in the fifth inning. … Albert Pujols left the game after being hit in the forearm by a pitch. He was diagnosed with a contusion and listed as day-to-day. … Dexter Fowler had two hits and is now 5 for 28 this spring. … The Angels’ 10-run outburst in the second included a run on the contact play. Cubs second baseman David Bote made a high throw to the plate and Kurt Suzuki slid in under the tag.

DEFENSE REPORT: Fowler ran in to try to make a catch but the ball dropped in front of him and then he let it get past him, allowing the hitter to get to third on the two-base error. … Shortstop Luis Rengifo made a nice catch of a popup in shallow left field.

UP NEXT: Angels vs. Rangers, Tuesday, 1 p.m. PT, Surprise Stadium, Fox Sports West, 830 AM
