OC Register: Angels rally for victory as Justin Upton, Zack Cozart return to action

Recommended Posts

THE GAME: The Angels overcame a quick four-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies 9-7 on Tuesday night at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Luke Bard started a bullpen game and gave up three runs in the first inning. Bard had allowed just one run in his first 5-2/3 innings, impressing the Angels enough that they added him to the 40-man roster. … Right-hander Cody Allen gave up a run on a homer to Tony Wolters and then he walked a batter, but he escaped further damage by striking out three of the top four hitters in the Rockies lineup. … Right-handers Hansel Robles and Luis Garcia each pitched a scoreless inning. Garcia has not allowed a run in any of his last four outings.

HITTING REPORT: Justin Upton played his first Cactus League game of the spring, after missing almost the entire spring with knee tendinitis. He walked in his first trip and blasted a homer to left field in his second. He played three innings in left field. “It felt pretty good to be back out there and see some pitches,” Upton said, adding that he feels, because of the at-bats he got in minor league games, he has time to get his timing where it should be by Opening Day. … Zack Cozart had a single in three at-bats and he played four innings at shortstop. He had only been scheduled to play three innings, but he had no plays so he wanted one more inning. He still didn’t get a play. “I physically feel great,” Cozart said. “I feel like I’m ready to start the season, for sure.” … Kole Calhoun had a pair of hits. Calhoun is 12 for 36 (.333) this spring. … Taylor Ward blasted a three-run homer, his second of the spring. … Jonathan Lucroy had three hits and a walk, improving to 12 for 35 (.343) this spring.

UP NEXT: Angels (LHP Tyler Skaggs) vs. Indians (RHP Merrill Kelly), Wednesday, 6 p.m. PT, Goodyear Ballpark
