Congratulations to our Los Angeles Angels #13 prospect Nick Maronde for making the Angels Opening Day roster for the 2014 season! The Angels will need him this year with all the potent left-handed bats in the A. L. West.

Originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft, Maronde was one of the first players from that draft to reach the Major Leagues when he appeared in 2012. Since then, Maronde has bounced up and down as the Angels experimented with him both as a starter and reliever.

Last year, Maronde made the full transition to relieving and the move has gone well for him. Maronde throws a low-90s 2 and 4-seam fastball, that can hit 94, and has gained some velocity since being drafted, especially in short bursts. Maronde pounds the zone with a mid-80s slider that is a plus pitch, especially against lefties. Maronde still has a changeup, but compared to his fastball and slider, is lagging behind in development.

The only real knock on Maronde has been the number of walks that he has given up in his career. Maronde has strikeout potential and keeps the ball in the yard. But, he needs to cut down on the free passes and throw strikes.

In 2014, Maronde will continue to be a reliever, and likely used as a left-handed specialist. He has the potential to become a workhorse in the rotation, especially if he develops his changeup. If not, he will have a very good career as a lefty in the pen.
