If only for a brief time, it's great to hear Daren behind the mic called white hot Halo's action again. I miss Daren's calls. It's nice to hear his voice. I still recall his stories of tooling around the Phoenix area in a Pinto sans AC. Too bad he missed out on calling 2002 by only a season. I hope this is not just a one-off situation but that the Angels can make some room for him in the broadcast booth.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAA/2013.shtml#Outfield::none Trumbo and Pujols are doing well, but Mark hasn't shown a lot of power. Calhoun isn't doing great, with 9 K's to go along with 5 BB and a .207 average. In the OF, Prospects Randall Girchuck and Travis Witherspoon had good springs, while starters Bourjos, Trout, and Hamilton are also doing well. Wells is kicking butt as well, yet the competition for the fifth spot is wide open. Trent Oeltjen and Matt Young are both having great springs, which coupled with Scott Cousins numbers being downright awful means either of these guys could take Cousins spot on the 40-Man, and Calhoun's spot on the…

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAA/2013.shtml#Catcher::none Iannetta has an OPS in the 1.116 range and Conger has one in the 1.268 range. They both have averages over .400. They are driving high OBP and both have great SLG percentages too. John Hester isn't hitting, but presumably his defense is up to par. Iannetta and Conger should be the Catcher's for the majority of 2013. A third catcher will only be brought in if Conger can't play defense to Scioscia's liking.

When C.J. Wilson walked across the field before this morning's workout, he was carrying a bat. It was a rare sight for spring training, and one probalby not repeated in any other American League camps. The Angels, however, have the distinction of... View the full article

A road trip to Arizona for spring training features a semi-epic home run and adventure of biblical proportions. PHOENIX — Let me tell you about Josh Hamilton's first rocket ship of spring. It isn't a perfect home run. He gets under it a bit more than he would've liked, so it's towering, corpulent, full of cha-cha. View the full article

Bought it this morning. Immediately simulated three separate seasons to see who would win the AL West. 1st season: A's 2nd season: Angels 3rd season: Rangers (The Astros finished each season with 114-115 losses; the M's won around 73-75 each season) I noticed that Vernon Wells was given about 500 AB's each season.... The gameplay is really really good this year...not that last year's was bad. But, there's a noticeable difference. The presentation is fantastic. Can't wait to play more! If you bought the game, let us know what you think of it!

Kole Calhoun is really good. His batting practice is extremely impressive and his speed is sometimes undervalued/underappreciated. I had him at 4.0 to first. Also, he looks very comfortable at first base. He should be on the team. Peter Bourjos' swing is much improved. His hands are super quick and some of the loop in his swing seems to have disappeared. Impressed me. Oh, 10.5 from home to 3rd. Ridiculous. Tommy Hanson was topping out at 89. Sat 86-88. Alberto Callaspo is very large. Alfonso Alcantara was hitting 98-99 in his bullpen on the backfield. Crazy movement on slider. Will likely be with Orem this year, but there is a slight chance that he w…

By Robert Cunningham, AngelsWin.com Staff Writer 2013 Outlook: Jason adds another left-handed, workhorse arm to our rotation. He doesn't feature strong strike out totals but he compensates by limiting walks and hits. He features one of the best change ups in the game which can really force batters to make weaker contact. Using the change up is part of the reason that Vargas has been able to pitch so many innings consistently over the last three years. Moving Vargas to Anaheim switches one pitcher's park for another. However what has changed is the defensive arrangement playing behind him and the move to Anaheim should benefit a fly ball pitcher like Jason. Last seas…

On a day that most of the Angels take off, the left-hander has a strong outing pitching against minor leaguers. TEMPE, Ariz. — For most major league veterans, spring training is a pretty low-key affair. All you have to do is get a little work in, break a sweat occasionally, and fine-tune a few things for the regular season. View the full article

By Ellen Bell - AngelsWin.com Staff Writer I've got this Spring Training thing down. Where to stay....where to sit at the game...where to wait for autographs...the basics. But there is one aspect of the Spring Training experience that has eluded me all these years; where to eat. When it comes to finding a great dining experience near Tempe Diablo Stadium, I've struck out more times than Mo Vaughn. No matter how I try, I usually end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, ordering the wrong thing. Like the time when I the hotel concierge suggested that I take my ten year old son to a local sports bar and grill to watch some March Madness basketball. “It’s a…

Looking forward to meeting everyone this Saturday at FanFest. Anyone else going to other games during the weekend? Excited to see some of the other Cactus League teams and stadiums this time around. My girlfriend and I will be at the Rangers vs. Giants in Scottsdale Friday, Athletics vs. Angels at Phoenix Municipal and of course Padres vs. Angels at Tempe on Sunday. We're debating on staying Monday to see another team/stadium, are there any suggestions what park would be nice to visit?

By Robert Cunningham - AngelsWin.com Staff Writer 2013 Outlook: So clearly Joe Blanton isn't the "Big Splash" that everyone was thinking of when the Angels acquired a pitcher during the offseason. No one is here to argue that. However, like Hanson, Joe could prove to be a "Value Splash" based on a recent history (since 2010) of increased strikeouts, with the addition of a cutter to his repetoire. If you take a glance at Joe's numbers from 2010 until now, you'll notice a) his strikeout rate has significantly increased over his career numbers, his walk rate has declined significantly over his career numbers, c) his xFIP has decreased significantly over his career numb…

Sabermetrics! The new lens with which many view the game of baseball! So ummm … what is it? What are all these new stats and measurements that GMs and commentators are using to evaluate the players we love (and hate)? Does it sometimes seem like you need to be a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out? Well, it feels that way to us too sometimes. So we decided to bring in Robert Cunningham, AngelsWin.com member and real life rocket scientist, to help us make sense of this stuff. Join host Geoff Stoddart and AngelsWin.com founder Chuck Richter as they talk with Robert about how pitching stats like WHIP, FIP and xFIP apply to the the Angels staff. Do the c…

Kazmir, on how he feels now compared to when he last pitched in the Angels organization: "Night-and-day difference. I'm just a completely different pitcher. I guess the velocity would be different by about 10 mph." You can't blame Butcher for this one. Like I said in another thread, Kazmir attributed his success back when he had his best seasons with the Rays to Mike Butcher too.
