OC Register: Former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter to remain on Hall of Fame ballot

Recommended Posts

Outfielder Torii Hunter, who spent five seasons with the Angels, received 38 votes in his first time on the Hall of Fame ballot, nearly double the total he needed to stay on the ballot.

Hunter received 9.5 percent of the 401 votes cast, exceeding the 5 percent threshold and allowing him to return to the ballot next year.

Hunter was one of three first-time candidates to receive enough votes to remain on the ballot. Pitchers Mark Buehrle (44, 11.0 percent) and Tim Hudson (21, 5.2 percent) also surpassed 5 percent.

Former Angels pitchers Dan Haren and LaTroy Hawkins did not gain enough votes to return. Hawkins received two votes and Haren did not receive any.

Slugger Bobby Abreu, who played with the Angels from 2009 to 2012, received 35 votes (8.7 percent) in his second year on the ballot.

A nine-time Gold Glove winner, Hunter was with the Angels from 2008 to 2012, making the All-Star team twice in those years. Three-time American League MVP Mike Trout said Hunter was one of his mentors during his first two seasons in the majors, in 2011 and 2012.

Although he will remain on the ballot, Hunter faces an uphill climb to earn the 75 percent necessary for induction in his 10 years of eligibility.
