OC Register: Shohei Ohtani, Angels agree to record-setting 1-year, $30-million deal

Recommended Posts

The Angels agreed to terms with Shohei Ohtani on a record-setting $30-million contract for 2023, avoiding arbitration.

The deal changes nothing about Ohtani’s future with the team, because the two-way player and 2021 American League MVP was already under control to the Angels for one more year before free agency.

The two sides simply completed the negotiations that would have happened in January or February a few months early.

It is likely the Angels and Ohtani are delaying any decisions on the two-way player’s future beyond 2023 until after the team is sold. Owner Arte Moreno announced in August he was exploring a deal.

Ohtani’s $30-million deal breaks the record for an arbitration-eligible player. Mookie Betts made $27 million in his final year of arbitration after agreeing to a deal with the Boston Red Sox in early 2020.

More to come on this story.
