OC Register: Mike Trout returns for first time in 10 months in Angels victory

THE GAME: Using most of their everyday players for the first time this spring, the Angels exploded for 12 hits and four homers in a 12-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Daniel Ponce De Leon gave up a homer to David Peralta in the first inning, and then nothing else through his two innings. He also walked two in the first, before throwing a perfect second. Ponce De Leon, 30, is in camp on a minor-league deal, and likely provides depth for Triple-A. … Right-hander Mike Mayers gave up a run on two hits. … Right-hander Jimmy Herget pitched a scoreless inning, with the help of a double play. … Right-hander Austin Warren gave up a run in one inning, although he should have been out of the inning if the defense had executed a routine double play. … Right-hander Andrew Wantz pitched a scoreless ninth.

HITTING REPORT: Mike Trout played in his first game in 306 days, after missing most of last season with a strained calf. Trout lined a single into left in each of his two at-bats. “I was like anxious to get out there before the game,” Trout said. “It felt really good … Just to go out there and be with the guys was fun.” … Shohei Ohtani singled in two at-bats in his spring debut … Taylor Ward blasted a homer to left field … Max Stassi hit a two-run homer just to the left of the batter’s eye … Tyler Wade singled twice, including a bunt single. Manager Joe Maddon said Wade decided to bunt on his own. Wade also showed his speed by tagging up from first on a fly ball to center field … Jack Mayfield hit a three-run homer down the left-field line … Jo Adell tripled into the gap in right-center … Jose Rojas hit a homer … The Angels scored seven runs against right-hander Dan Straily, who is in the running for the Diamondbacks’ rotation.

DEFENSE REPORT: Second baseman Luis Rengifo snagged a line drive and then dove to the bag to turn an unassisted double play. Rengifo also made a nice play on a high chopper up the middle. … Third baseman Rojas backhanded a ball down the line and started a double play, with second baseman Andrew Velazquez making a quick turn. … Velazquez later mishandled a grounder that should have been an inning-ending double play, and the Angels had to settle for one out and a run scored.

UP NEXT: Angels at Mariners, Sunday, 1 p.m. PT, Peoria Sports Complex, Bally Sports West, 830 AM
