OC Register: Patrick O’Neal to join Angels’ TV broadcast team

Recommended Posts

Patrick O’Neal, who has been working on the Angels’ pre- and post-game shows, will move into the booth as one of the team’s play-by-play voices for television broadcasts in 2022.

O’Neal will be the Angels’ secondary play-by-play announcer, working as the backup to lead announcer Matt Vasgersian, whose availability is limited because of his duties with MLB Network.

Vasgersian and O’Neal will work with analyst Mark Gubicza. Bally Sports West is expected to make further announcements about the broadcast team at a later date. They did not announce a role for José Mota in 2022. Mota worked as the third member of the in-game broadcast team, reporting from field level, in 2021.

O’Neal will be the fifth play-by-play announcer to work with Gubicza since 2020, the last year for longtime announcer Victor Rojas. Daron Sutton started the 2021 season as Vasgersian’s backup, but he was replaced at the All-Star break by Rich Waltz.

O’Neal worked nine games doing play-by-play last September.

Besides his duties with the Angels’ pre- and post-game shows, O’Neal has filled similar roles on Kings hockey broadcasts. He has won L.A. Area Emmy Awards twice, in 2006 and 2018. The SoCal Sports Broadcasters Association named him the Top Pre- and Postgame Host five times.
